several minutes. his family is now sharing its reaction to the district attorney's office deciding to charge three officers with involuntary manslaughter. again, this is three years to the day since his death, and there has been so much concern from the family ever since that day, abc seven news reporter tara campbell was at tonight's gathering, a celebration friday of the life of mario gonzales and the criminal charges filed against alameda police officers in his death. >> exactly three years ago, my, you know, like my son, they died right here in this park. mario's mother speaking one day after alameda county district attorney pamela price announced the results of a new investigation, eric mckinley, james fisher and cameron leahy. >> leahy have each been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, price pledging to reexamine the case when she first took office, reversing the decision of her predecessor, nancy o'malley, who cleared the officers of any criminal wrongdoing. >> you know, it's not easy, but

i expected the best, all the times, you know, i keep praying, praying, praying, praying. and, you know, god is good. >> price is public accountability unit concluding mario gonzales died of asphyxia. asian a departure from the initial report pointing to toxic effects of methamphetamine and morbid obesity. among the causes of his death. mario's brother, jerry gonzales, says his sights are now set on a conviction, wanting justice not only for mario but also the seven year old son he left behind, the three men, each facing up to four years in state prison. does it feel like justice if they are convicted? >> yeah, it'll be is definitely a major win and step into the right direction. we're going to continue advocating for this. >> you know, amanda michael blanco works for a restorative justice nonprofit. her brother, eric salgado, was shot and killed by california highway patrol officers in 2020. the officers were never charged. my hope for this evening is that one we're in community that we don't lose sight from this

fight, because this is just the beginning. >> and mario's mother plans on doing exactly that, continuing the fight. >> nobody can can give me my son back at all. my son, is he already gone? yeah, unfortunately. you know, like my son. you know, like he's not here no more. but i'm here. i'm still, you know, fighting for him. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> new developments with a deadly shooting in pleasant hill last month. two men from richmond are now under arrest. the shooting happened within twin bridge circle on march 19th. investigators say that's when two people tried to steal from a delivery driver on his way home. that led to a shootout between them all, leaving the driver and another suspect dead. >> looking ahead now to the most significant legal case on homelessness in decades, heading to the supreme court next week, on monday, the court will hear arguments on whether people can be punished just for sleeping outdoors. as we follow this case for months, the town of grants pass, oregon, is suing for the right to ticket people who sleep

on the street when they have no other shelter to go to appeals courts have said that's cruel and unusual punishment. governor newsom and san francisco mayor london breed are among the california leaders, asking the supreme court to give them more freedom to clear encampments. advocates like jennifer friedenbach say sweeps won't solve the problem. we don't want to see cities, using police and, using criminalization and jail as a way to punish homeless people for being homeless. the supreme court's decision is expected by the end of june. >> it's a story we've been following since the conclusion of aipac mayor london breed signed a deal during her visit to china this week to bring a pair of giant pandas to the san francisco zoo. the pandas are expected to arrive next year, but it's going to take a lot of money to host them. abc seven news reporter luz pena has a look at what happens next. >> it's official. pandas are coming to san francisco. what do you think about pandas coming to san francisco?

>> good. are you excited in accomplishment over a decade in the making that involved mayor london breed formally asking the chinese president on the tarmac last november, after san francisco hosted the apec summit. >> and panda. experts are from china checking the zoo this year. and now it's finally happening. >> san francisco is absolutely thrilled to be welcoming giant pandas to the san francisco zoo. >> the san francisco zoo will receive the giant pandas as part of china's panda diplomacy program. when the city hosted the pandas for a three month period in 1984 and 1985, the zoo had over 1 million visitors. >> we are so thrilled for the return of the giant panda after all these years that the san francisco zoo and gardens, as you know, the giant panda represents and symbolizes collaboration and also bridges divides between cultural differences. the latest

estimates indicate there are less than 2200 giant pandas in the world today. >> the organization pandas international said. san francisco's cool weather will be ideal for the pandas. >> they're going to need an enclosure that can get, you know, out of the elements. they're going to need a large yard, so they can walk around and have some space. they will need some enrichment, activities . >> the zoo's deputy director confirmed they've been gearing up for the pandas return. >> the renovation has to take place first before they can come. >> pandas in san francisco will come with a hefty price tag. before the pandemic, the estimated cost to build a new facility for the pandas at the zoo was estimated at $25 million. >> it's definitely worth the investment to bring san francisco zoo really on the map. as a global attraction. this is a really important investment for san francisco and an investment in our visitor economy. regardless of age. >> several san franciscans view giant pandas coming to the city as a win, good for the relationship between the

countries and good for san francisco. are you excited to finally be able to see a panda in real life? yeah yeah, yeah, in san francisco. luz pena, abc seven news. now abc seven news insider phil matier says the pandas are part of the mayor's bigger effort to change the image of san francisco. >> you can't fight the image of san francisco. you just try to create a new one. i mean, people, new york has its problems. london has its problems. but you tend to forget that because there's so much going on. so this is one step in that direction at the same time, she's getting the pandas, she's also on the phone to the ceo of macy's saying, listen, we know you're leaving, but can we get you to stay longer or maybe redesign or use a smaller store there? she's trying to keep that. she's trying to possibly get women's soccer playing in san francisco. another thing is maybe get a chinese university to locate a branch in the downtown area. in other words, making sort of good noise to keep things happening and have the public and the world aware

of san francisco in a different light. >> the next challenge, phil says , is raising the money needed for the enclosure, for the pandas. >> all right. well, is it a weekend to get out and enjoy things like zoos and parks? >> we're counting on it. >> meteorologist sanjay patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. how are things looking, sandy? >> fantastic. >> dan and amy, you'll want to take your plans outdoors, whether it's the park or the zoo or any outdoor activities. biking, hiking. let me show you a live picture. this is how you're going to start off your weekend. you see the gray skies over san francisco from our exploratorium camera. low clouds and fog, not just near the coast, but advancing across the bay. tonight, visibility has dropped to seven miles in half moon bay and petaluma tomorrow. here's what you can expect in the morning. it's going to be clouds and fog with some spotty drizzle. 4050. mostly sunny by noontime and a mild to warm one for 4 p.m. around the bay and inland. cool at the coast. still going to be pleasant at 7 p.m. we're talking about 50s to 70s. there is a change coming on

sunday and bigger changes next week. i'll be back with that full forecast coming right up. >> all right, sandy, thank you so much. happening now a 21 mile stretch of highway 37 is closed from vallejo to sears point for a repaving project. closure started at 9 p.m. and runs through the weekend until monday morning. there are detours which involve highways 2912 and 121. traffic could get backed up not just by people trying to visit wine country, but there's also an event at the sonoma raceway. shutdowns are planned for the next four weekends to complete the work in the north bay. the sausalito pier is temporarily closed, suspending ferry service to the city. an issue was discovered during a routine inspection this afternoon, which needs immediate attention as a precaution, it will be closed to golden gate ferry service until repairs can be made. replacement. golden gate transit bus service is available. there's no estimate on when it will reopen. >> new at 11 bitcoin has done what is known as halving, which means those who mined the cryptocurrency will get half of

>> opening statements in former president donald trump's hush money trial are set to begin next week. a 12 person jury has already been sworn in and seated . it's made up of seven men and five women and includes six alternate jurors. they will now have to decide if trump is guilty of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to adult film actress stormy daniels. trump has pleaded not guilty and has been outspoken about the case. >> we just had another hearing and the trial starts on monday, which is long before a lot of people thought the judge wants this to go as fast as possible

and as for his reasons, not for my reasons. at and this is really a concerted witch hunt. >> this is the first time a former us president has been tried in a criminal case. >> tesla is recalling nearly 4000 of its cyber trucks that could cause the cybertruck to accelerate unintentionally and cause a crash. the pedal can get stuck. federal officials say. workers assembling the trucks at tesla's factory near austin, texas, improperly used soap in the pedals, assembly. the sticking issue was first raised in social media and online discussion groups that posted about it. a new technology developed here in the bay area is helping doctors detect lung cancer faster and safer than ever before. and the ion robot, which was developed by sunnyvale based intuitive surgical, helps guide doctors to the proper spot to get a biopsy inside the lungs , the robot is inserted through the throat of the patient and navigates through the lungs branches. this way, doctors don't need to insert large

needles through the patient's ribs. >> if you put a needle from the outside into the lung, the lung can collapse. it's like poking a balloon, and that happens 5 to 15% of the time, depending on what the patient's lungs are like. when we biopsy from the inside, that risk of lung collapse is around 1. >> the iron robot has already been used on three patients a big change is coming to the annual 420 celebration at golden gate park tomorrow. >> the san francisco rec and parks department is holding a field day with volleyball and kickball tournaments instead of the usual hippie hill event. it was canceled because of financial constraints. now, that likely won't stop people who still want to celebrate cannabis culture. >> i think it's an opportunity for to get back to the noncommercial roots of enjoyment of cannabis, and i hope that many people come out who might not have come to a big commercial sponsored event and make a day of it and have a picnic with their families and pass around a couple joints here on hippie hill in anticipation of crowds. >> the psychedelic church of

ambrosia is teaming with nonprofits to send safety staff portable toilets and a medical tent to the park. we're learning more about the timeline for a popular disneyland attraction to go green. >> disney is getting rid of the gas cars at its autopia attraction, where kids can get behind the wheel today, disney told the l.a. times. the new cars will be fully electric. they'll hit the road in tomorrowland by 2026, not clear whether the ride will close temporarily in order to make the swap. disney is the parent company of abc seven, and we are constantly working to build a better bay area, and one of the main issues is being highlighted this weekend. earth day is officially on monday, but there are numerous events that are serving really as calls to action. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez was at one this evening that featured an environmental youth movement. what do we want? >> action. when do we want it? >> now. the palo alto student climate coalition organized a rally on friday that's part of a

global youth led movement to end fossil fuels. >> i think i see that this is reality. i found it's really easy to get brought down by climate apathy, high school senior julia says even people at home can help go greener. >> i personally am vegan and i'm really excited to kind of share the environmental benefits that reducing your meat consumption and dairy consumption can have on the planet. organizations like palo alto forward shared their work to promote building housing in transit areas that can reduce the amount of driving , organize and advocate and get those voices out there. >> get them to the forefront. so it's not just people who hate housing showing up at public hearings, but it's those of us saying, no, we want this. we want more neighbors. >> earth day is monday, but events will be happening all weekend long throughout the bay area. each year, the organization pacific beach coalition, focuses on a different species to celebrate earth day. this year. it's whales. >> it really gives us a focus

and connects us to the species. so we care a little bit more about it and we will, reduce our single use plastic because we know that's helping the whale. >> on saturday, the organization will host whale fest in pacifica. >> these majestic species are so special and they contribute greatly to the health of the ocean. >> last year, volunteers with pacific beach coalition removed 44,000 pounds of trash along the coast from daly city to half moon bay, including more than 200 cigaret butts. len adams said you don't need to come to the beach to help the ocean. >> let's make a commitment to not forget our shopping bag. let's take our shopping bag. let's bring our coffee cup. let's, let's let's bring our spoon and our fork and reduce the plastic that we're using in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> just a little can make a big difference in someone's life. dan and i tonight served as hosts of the big futures gala in

san francisco. the auction helps raise money for big brothers big sisters of the bay area. there were all sorts of cool items, from premium forty-niners tickets to a weekend at napa's bottlerock music festival. and when we last checked, the website out, they had raised over $330,000. such a great cause, dan. it's one that you have worked with with her a long time. >> i've been involved with him for a while and it's so nice to be together doing that tonight. and what a great group of people. what a fun night. they raised a lot of money. excellent yes. >> makes a big difference. >> all right. let's turn our attention to the weekend weather forecast. >> yes. meteorologist andy patel is here with that sandia. yeah. >> and ama and dan, the weather looks fantastic for the weekend. i want to show you some live pictures right now from our tower cameras. and you will see one thing in there, which is gray skies. the common denominator. no matter what direction you are looking, temperatures right now, in the 50s and 60s, it was a cooler day. you notice the sea breeze. you probably notice a gray start. this morning. the low clouds and fog pulled away, but they're back and you can see

pretty much closed in on the coast. we are also seeing some higher clouds starting to move in, as a system in the pacific is inching closer to us now. this system at this hour is not expected to move into our area and bring us rain. it is going to stay well to the north of us. but the climate prediction center is saying the 6 to 10 day outlook will be very different around the bay area. that starts april 25th, which is next thursday, and it continues into the following week. so i want to show you what they're saying near normal for the east coast, above average in terms of precipitation across the central u.s. below average for the southeast. and we are included in that above average category, which is 33 to 50% chance that we'll see above average rainfall during this time period. so i do want to quickly show you when that's going to happen on thursday. things are still pretty quiet, but late thursday going into friday is when we have our opportunity for rain. and this is a week from today. but just keep that in the back

of your mind as you enjoy your weekend plans. here's a lovely view from our emeryville camera. overnight tonight, clouds, fog, spotty drizzle. this weekend we're talking about sunshine and spring warmth in our bayside and inland communities, and for the middle of next week, more clouds and cooler weather followed by the rain chances. if you're going to the giants game tomorrow at oracle park against the d-backs. 62 bright and breezy for first pitch at pitch at 105. ninth inning. sunny and mild, 67 degrees. you'll need that hat and the sunscreen. 40s 50s first thing early in the morning with the fog and the high clouds. by noontime, you're seeing the sun away from the coast 50s coast side with some fog lingering elsewhere. the sun is out, and by early afternoon you're already seeing those temperatures popping up into the 70s for many areas, eventually into the 80s for our warmest spots. so out the door. watch out for the fog. there will be some damp spots because of the drizzle, so that's something to keep in mind tomorrow afternoon. 77 in the south bay and san jose los gatos, 77, in gilroy on the peninsula, 73 in redwood city, 61. pacifica, downtown san

francisco, 67 degrees in the north bay, you're going to see sunshine and warmer weather. 79 in santa rosa, 74 in san rafael. so today was cooler. tomorrow, temperatures inch back up 71 in oakland, 73 fremont head inland, 79 in concord and 80 degrees in brentwood. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. and it does feature a gray start, but plenty of sun. after that, we go with a warmer pattern on sunday low 60s to mid 80s and it's still nice spring warmth on monday before things cool off midweek and then increasing clouds on thursday. much cooler. and then friday. we're talking about a chance of showers. so dan and anna, we're going to go from shades and basking in the sun to needing those umbrellas next week possibly. >> all r
