i do tonight. >> columbia university and new york city are the epicenter of the college campus protests we are seeing across the country. members of the nypd scene moving in with military equipment to take control. as now the bay area awaits a historical day of action of its own. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz, and i'm dan ashley. we'll start with the unrest in new york boiling over with widespread arrests as officers move in both columbia university and the city college

of new york campus were stormed by nypd officers, some with swat vehicles and riot shields. as pro palestinian protesters stood their ground. the epicente the pro-palestinian protests on college campuses across the country is clearing out tonight, nypd officers moving in on protesters barricaded inside columbia university's hamilton hall and removed the crowd at the encampment that's been on a campus lawn for nearly two weeks now. officers climbing into that occupied building through the second floor window as police wearing helmets and carrying riot shields, waited at the entrance to the campus, police sources telling abc news tonight. nearly 50 people have been arrested. protesters refusing to leave by the university's deadline yesterday, breaking into that building about 24 hours ago, the university says that move inside hamilton hall is what compelled them to call in the police. the

nypd says they found about 40 people inside the building, many of them aren't students. >> we will always protect the right to protest, but we must balance that right with the right to keep students, the school and our city safe. police say the people inside hamilton hall could be charged with burglary and criminal mischief, while the protesters outside could face trespassing and disorderly conduct charges. >> tonight, protest organizers telling abc news they feel the university wasn't negotiating in good faith. through days of discussions. >> we thought that the university would be more willing to negotiate and to communicate with their student body. >> in a letter to the nypd, columbia's president is asking for officers to remain on campus at least through may 17th, when commencement is over, to make sure the encampments don't come back tonight. the nypd says all that's left of the protests are the tents students slept in, and it will be up to the university to remove them. >> we need an apology and an

agreement with the students that the university is willing to come back to the negotiating table and talk with us regarding our demands, and hear those college campus protests are also happening in the bay area, and tomorrow marks may day, which over the years has turned into a huge protest day for workers. >> there are dozens of protests scheduled for tomorrow, many of which are being linked to pro-palestinian rallies. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone joins us live with more j.r. umma. >> dan, at this point, it's unclear how big all of these rallies will be. an unclear if protesters will target any bridge or highway like they did two weeks ago, seeing a march and rally shut down the port of oakland on international workers day, known as may day or may 1st, is nothing new. you can see one of the past rallies here this year, though, may day and the threat of another port shutdown comes just weeks after pro-palestinian protesters shut

down the golden gate bridge and interstate 80. and it comes as hundreds of college students have taken to their campuses to protest the situation in gaza. as for what will happen wednesday, nobody knows. >> and of course, the protesters don't want anyone to know exactly where they're going to be or what they're going to do. uh- law enforcement is geared up, i think, for a pretty major, the responsive effort to keep highways and bridges open. >> professor rory little of uc law, san francisco, says there is much more acceptance of protests in the bay area. many here protested themselves in the 60s and 70s. he believes the recent bridge and highway shutdowns by pro-palestine protesters, though, angered many people angry at the idea that these that a minority group of protesters could effectively shut down quadrants of the bay area, and i don't think that was good for their message. may day, though, will happen as college

campus protests across the country heat up. tuesday night in new york city, police cleared the columbia university encampment and arrested those who took over a campus building. a night and day difference from what we're seeing in berkeley, where police have kept distance from the now 175 tents i was at the encampment today at uc berkeley and it was actually surprisingly peaceful. >> you could hear birds chirping. i'm proud thus far and i'm really hopeful that we can maintain the peaceful atmosphere at uc berkeley, an atmosphere similar to current scenes at stanford and san francisco state . >> i did reach out to san francisco police and oakland police to see if they are preparing for wednesday with extra officers, but did not hear back from either department. just know that your commute could be affected if there is another highway protest. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> yeah, definitely good to keep

those details coming right up. ama, you're not going to want to miss this because it involves your weekend. >> all right. thank you so much, sandhya. tonight, an hour's long meeting over a possible new charter school in vallejo. right now, the vallejo city council is considering whether to let elite public schools open a high school campus in the city's downtown area. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been closely tracking this meeting tonight. he joins us live to explain the controversy. tim >> yeah. now, it's important to note that the vallejo planning commission actually approved this proposal to open the high school campus downtown. however, that decision was appealed. and because of that, it's now been sent to the vallejo city council, who will make the final decision. currently, elite public schools runs a k through 12 charter program at a campus in north vallejo, but they are proposing moving the high school students away from that campus and creating a new one in the city's downtown core, using a currently vacant building. now, the school ceo says if the proposal goes through, the school would renovate the

existing structure and have it ready for use by the fall. she tells me she thinks the move would help revitalize the surrounding area. >> right now, there's blight, there's nothing there, the building owner says. for the last 20 years, there's been just few little singleton businesses, but nothing really to occupy the entire space. >> though not everyone is on board with that plan, though, and during tuesday's special meeting, many came out to express their opposition. some think the school could actually have an adverse effect on the existing and future businesses in the downtown area. others also worry that the influx of students could increase violence in the area, and they question whether this location is the best place to create a school. >> we are not against schools, we're not against charter schools. we're just looking at the location and saying this particular location is not good for a school. and oh, by the way, vallejo has lots of vacant school campuses where we think it would now. >> elite initially submitted their proposal for the project back in may of 2022. so whatever

the city council votes tonight will conclude a nearly two year long process in the newsroom. tim johnson, abc seven news okay, tim, thanks very much. >> the company hoping to build a new city near fairfield in solano county, says it has enough signatures to qualify the project for the november ballot. california forever ceo jan sramek says this shows that solano county residents are excited about the plan that would build new homes for 400,000 people. >> they are all saying yes, we want to have a say in the future of this place that we love. yes, we want to end these long commutes and have good paying jobs. home here, close by. yes, we want to have homes for us and for our children and we want to have them now. >> the signatures will now go to the county for verification. we've reached out to the opponents of the project for a reaction, but have not yet heard back. >> now to the historic shift in u.s. drug policy, the biden

administration, through the dea, is moving to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug. yeah. >> tonight, a statement from the department of justice says the deal is far from done. >> and as abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains, there would still be some limits to how it's viewed on the federal level. a momentous plan is in the works that would change federal rules on marijuana. >> the department of justice is recommending reclassifying marijuana from a schedule one drug that encompasses heroin and ecstasy to a schedule three drug, which includes testosterone and tylenol with codeine. the change would mean marijuana could be lawfully prescribed as medication. this is the most significant move in cannabis. >> this and really drug policy, since the inception of cannabis prohibition and the war on drugs. >> sarah gersten is the executive director of last prisoner project, a national nonprofit organization that works on cannabis criminal justice reform. >> we have people literally

serving life sentences for selling $20 worth of cannabis, gersten said. >> even though the vast majority of states have legalized marijuana, generating billions in tax revenue, an estimated 30,000 individuals are still incarcerated on cannabis charges. some lawmakers are working to change that to, unfortunately, simply moving cannabis to a schedule three rather than removing it entirely from the controlled substances act, which would be de-scheduling. >> it doesn't actually bring state regulated marketplaces like california into compliance with federal law. >> amber center is a cannabis justice advocate. her nonprofit, called supernova women works to empower black and brown shareholders in the cannabis industry, the center said. with the potential change, business owners may see a tax relief when cannabis is officially reclassified by the government. >> that punitive tax will go away, which is pretty significant. it's like a 30%

>> the alameda county board of supervisors decided tonight to delay setting a date on a special election to potentially recall district attorney pamela price. the delay could allow them to combine the recall election with the november general election, saving millions of dollars. regardless, recall supporters disapprove of the decision. >> nobody cares about that. the level of inconsistency and all of the questions that went on today, i feel was kind of unprofessional. i feel that at this point in time, they should be able to answer every question , and they should have a procedure on what needs to be done next. this just didn't start yesterday. we started this a year ago, almost. >> also today, price called on the supervisors to declare the recall signature count invalid. >> a handful of wealthy folks who want to overturn the election has been rife with fraud, has been rife with harassment of my supporters. >> she filed complaints alleging

illegal signature gathering, california's fair political practices commission announced today it will investigate the organization behind the recall effort. >> all right, here's a live look at the bay area's airports right now, as the tsa is giving passengers a new way to get through security faster, travelers now have an option to combine precheck and clear into one service for $200 a year. you can use clear to skip the line and precheck for a faster security screening. right now, the only location you can sign up in person in california is at sacramento international airport. california was considering banning the clear service. that bill was watered down in committee. and now if it passes, it will only prevent clear from expanding to other airports in california. >> it's one of the best parts of going to check out pier 39, watching those iconic sea lions chilling out on the floating blocks. the animals have been extra active thanks to a steady food supply provided by a large

school of anchovy, the harbor master says they've counted about 1000 sea lions this week. that count is the highest it's been in seven years. >> he sleep like. >> the only reason i come down here is to see the sea lions they like so funny and so nice. >> i love them and they're like pushing each other off the in the water. >> over the years, numbers have really fluctuated. the surge started about a week and a half ago. a rep from the marine mammal center tells us this is a sign that san francisco bay is doing well. tesla is gutting the team behind its electric vehicle charging stations. elon musk announced today he's laying off the entire group responsible for building its supercharger stations. that's nearly 500 people, musk says. tesla will slow down construction of new charging stations and focus on upkeep of existing chargers. tesla has 10,000 superchargers in california alone, but the state's relying on a dramatic expansion to keep up with the number of evs on the road.

a minute. sunday, may 5th, cinco de mayo, 804. and june 20th. will be shortly after 830. well, you'll certainly have warmer weather tomorrow to enjoy 80 degrees in concord that is well above the average of 75. it's going to remain warm right on through friday before you see a 21 degree drop from tomorrow to saturday, and that sets the stage for some rain coming our way on saturday. let me show you what you can expect in the short term, though, high pressure over the pacific. low pressure inland. the wind flow is out of the northwest. that has been bringing us the breezy to gusty conditions as 18 mile an hour winds right now at sfo, 16 at fairfield. those onshore breezes certainly playing a part in keeping it on the cool side along the coast sea surface temperatures, by the way, are running below where they should be for this time of year. wind advisory for solano county until 5 p.m. tomorrow. gusts up to 45 miles an hour in that area, so the winds will pick up once again through that region. temperatures 40s and 50s. right

now, as we look at your hour by hour wind forecast tomorrow, once again, we are expecting the winds to ramp up in some areas, but in the overnight hours drop off and in the afternoon up to 30 miles an hour along the coast. tonight into tomorrow. breezy pattern continues the next few days. we're talking about sunny and warmer weather and for your saturday, wet, windy and much cooler. the weekend is not a washout though, in case you do have outdoor plans, let's go hour by hour tomorrow morning. it's a clear start, 40s and 50s on your temperatures by the lunch hour it is going to be so nice. you'll want to get outside and enjoy some sun. maybe take your lunch outside 70 inland 50s coast side. we head into the early afternoon and you're already in the upper 70s. i'll show you where your high temperatures will end up by the time we end the day. so your morning numbers will be in the 40s, 50s, breezy coast side, cooler. otherwise tomorrow afternoon, low 60s to the low 80s. it is going to be windy on the coast, but not the case in our inland communities. here
