. right now at 7:00, tens of thousands of people have been told to get out as a massive wildfire burns out of control in san diego county and bay area crews are headed down south. good evening,. here's what we know right now. nine wildfires are burning. the most dangerous is the san marcos fire. the wind has been erratic this afternoon. some 13,000 people were told to evacuate. here's an update from the fire line. >> reporter: eight fires continue to burn here while some homes were lost and that's -- 24 homes at this point. firefighters have done a remarkable job of saving thousands of other homes. but the bottom line is, they're

still fighting tonight. firefighters in san diego county are still battle raging wildfires that have already burned more than 9,000 acres. additional air tankers and helicopter are deploy to the region but it's too late for some. >> if i had everything i possibly could want, it was absolutely gorgeous and now it's all gone. >> my heart goes out to those who surfed losses. although the losses look like they're being contained. >> reporter: a large wildfire rages on, destroying homes. scary scenes like this shows what happens when uncontrollable flames meet sweeping winds, a sort of fire tornado forms right near people's homes. nearby, the largest wildfire threatens camp pendleton. so far thousands have been evacuated from san diego county. >> you've been asked to

evacuate, but trust me, the fire officials know -- >> reporter: thousands of firefighters work to put the blazes out but they're up against record heat, dry winds and low humidity, not to mention fatigue. the cause of the fires remains under investigation. but officials say months with little rainfall made grass so dry a -- a fire could spark almost anywhere with very little eat. many worry this may be just the beginning. >> reporter: and late this evening, this afternoon, firefighters, officials, did confirm one death now in san diego county attributed to these wildfires. they are hoping to get a handle on these fires starting tonight and into the next few days, into the weekend. mother nature will be helping out. a shift in the winds and the temperatures are expected to drop. reporting live from carlsbad. back to you. firefighters here in the bay area are headed south today

ready to help crews. one team packed up their gear this morning from livermore. they include firefighters from many areas. exactly where they'll be sent and for how long depends on what will be happening in southern california. >> we're geared up, train and ready to go. our resources ready and we're anticipating a very busy season. but it started earlier and we're headed down south. >> 24 more strike teams are on standby waiting for the call. the bay area teams can be spared because of the cooler weather expected here in the next several days. mark, what does the forecast look like for that fire fight down south? >> their forecast matches ours. down towards southern california, the weather pattern beginning to change and that will help the fire crews. another day today of warm and hot temperatures, around the

fire zone. with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. very dry, low humidity levels, right around 10 percent and some gusty winds out, there approaching 25 miles-an-hour. talking about changes developing, as you can see on the satellite, we have the high clouds approaching the bay area, but more of an on-shore breeze developing. this will help send in more moisture. over the next few days, the fog will be redeveloping and humidity levels going up and things -- more of our local foe cast coming up. we'll tell you how much cool can you can expect friday. back to you. >> for more video, just go to our website and look for the links right there on our home page. >> grass fire quickly spread in windy conditions this afternoon destroying one family's home. the home caught fire after 1:30 tomorrow. from the chopper, you can see the large home was fully engulfed in flames. crews say it started as a

vegetation fire and then spread to an out building and then the two-story home. no one was hurt, but you can see here the home is a total loss. a woman accused of attacking a feud in a san jose walmart appeared in court today. the child is still recovering after being hit with a tire iron on tuesday. we're live now to explain why prosecutors call it a hate crime and say it was a premeditated attack. an. >> reporter: sources say she knew what she was doing when she went into that walmart. she was looking for someone to kill. it was a brief court appearance, but she spent most of it mumbling to herself. the 20-year-old is accused of trying to kill a little girl with a tire iron. >> this is every parent's worst nightmare. >> reporter: it happened at this san jose walmart. they say she struck the four- year-old with a tire iron injuring her. her father intervened and was hit with the second blow.

prosecutors believe the attack was racially motivated. >> what we know about the suspect is she came into the walmart, targeted the family, because they were asian, she attacked them and this is a premeditated, willful, deliberate act on her part. >> reporter: she's now charged with attempted murder and assault where a deadly weapon. both with hate crime enhancements. >> we believe we can prove that will she did go into there to target that family. >> reporter: the little girl is recovering from her injuries. meanwhile shoppers at that walmart are still shocked. >> whether she's homeless or not, you just don't do that. there's right and wrong, nothing in between. >> it's abnormal. i mean, you don't do something like that and then have to surf some consequences and not have no concern. something's wrong. >> reporter: she's being held without bail. her next court appearance is set for may 23 should. live in san jose, an ruben,

channel 2 news. we quickly learned that today's bust is a much larger investigation involving raised in other areas. we were at the property and talked to investigators about what they found. >> reporter: the morning wake- up alarm was a core results of roosters and band saws. two dozen officers from fairfield police and napa and solano county sheriff's office searchd this property. >> it's multiple acres, a lot of outbuildings, a lot of sheds. >> reporter: kicking in doors and cutting open storage boxes, looking for evidence. >> when you're looking for narcotics, they can be hidden anywhere. >> reporter: police say they found methamphetamine, marijuana guns and ammunition here. >> you can go inside, but... >> reporter: they say they raided this for guns and drugs. >> guns and drugs? i don't know. >> reporter: officers arrested

44-year-old collins, today's bust is connected to two other raised in the last two months, including this one in cordelia. >> one of our jobs is to try to confiscate and take guns off the street because guns are equated to violence. >> it does surprise me. >> reporter: this neighbor says she knew her neighbor was being watched by the sheriff, but not for drugs or weapons, but for roosters. >> they were out here last week and i could tell that they were counting roosters, because i could see them like this counting them. >> reporter: the sheriff's office confirmed that deputies have been monitoring the property with compliance with county codes that limit the number of roosters. those ever those codes are meant to prevent cock fighting. but the real alarm for neighbors is what they couldn't hear. >> we've never heard guns, never seen guns. >> reporter: i asked police if there was any threat given what they found on the property for neighbor neighbors. they said they didn't know of anything specific but any time you have guns or drugs, anything can happen.

>> surveillance footage could help determine why a person was struck and killed by a bar train in east bay this morning. they were walk knowledge on the track nearly bart station at 10 a.m. the station was closed till about noon. they are interviewing witnesses and will review station camera footage in their investigation. in san francisco this year, there have been as many pedestrians killed as homicide victims. and prosecutors say they need help handling all of those cases. seven people have died after being hit by cars so far this year. the d. a. has asked the mayor to give his office $400,000 for an attorney, an investigator and a paralegal. one of those victims, 79-year- old eye zach was killed crossing sunset boulevard in february. the driver 71, will be taken to trial for misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. >> we need to do everything that we can to get a very clear message out there that when you're driving a motor vehicle, you have a much higher

responsibility. >> reporter: the family is preparing to file a claim against the city because they say the intersection where he died is dangerous. a big rig smashed into a funeral home or market street in san francisco. it burst into flames, leaked fuels and did a lot of damage. david stevenson now with a video we obtained of that fiery crash. >> reporter: the flames rose almost two stories high. firefighters from station 6 located just around the corner arrived at 12:39 arm. >> four minutes after the first call. dan barber was evacuated from the hotel next door. >> the next thing you know, someone is running down the hall. firemen are evacuating us. >> reporter: the hood of the big rig blew up as driving down the 15th street. the driver drove across the median and ruptured one fuel tank before impact. >> all of a sudden there was a

huge balm of flames but they put it out very quickly. >> reporter: the driver and a passenger escaped the cab. one was treated at a local hospital for a broken leg. it's not clear how fast the driver was traveling, or where the fire erupted before the crash. the accident shut down the busy westbound lanes on the spot for about twelve hours. as crews contained 150 gallons of diesel fuel and removed the wreck. >> we've never had anything like this. been a few feet more, the mortuary would have been gone. >> reporter: the funeral home celebrated 90 years last month. >> we have a couple of funerals planned for tomorrow, but they're both at the churches. and so they're away from the funeral home. >> reporter: the food distributor operating the big rig did not return our call. sullivan funeral home says things should be back to normal in a week. david stevenson, ktbu, channel 2 news. how amazon is creating

never order and recall. the 2004 to 2012 chevrolet malibu, 2004 honor 2007 malibu max, 2005-2010 pontiac g6 and the 2007 to 2010 saturn aura. tired of bouncing through pot holes, today oakland public works began the pothole bit. crews will spend a week packing up streets and then move onto other areas of the streets. the pothole bit is part of an area to keep oakland's streets, vehicles and pedestrian traffic safe. it says it hopes to repair 2500 pot holes. the legal battle over a popular beach steps out of the courtroom for a field trip today. the judge presiding over a trial in redwood city for public access to martin beach took a tour of that property today. we caught up with an attorney for the plaintiff after the tour was over. he represents the foundation that is suing venture capitalist who bought the property in 2010 and made it

but it is. >> reporter: today's message, city closed. it's too hot. eugene lives near the sign's temporary location. >> some guy just walked by and changed it. >> reporter: turns out, it is. these electronic signs are rented out to events all over the bay area. so it is possible that somebody knows the code to these locks. specific highway rentals out of hayworth owns this sign. >> close to a hundred message boards out. it happens once -- once, twice a year maybe. >> reporter: the displayed massage is controlled within the equipment. >> once they have the passwords and the combinations, it's not real hard. >> reporter: the company doesn't change the locks every time signs are rented because it would be expensive. and sometimes construction crews need quick access to broadcast traffic warnings. today's message may not have been official. but it was timely. >> it was pretty funny. pretty appropriate for the day, i think.

look at san francisco, really cooled off into the upper 50's. and san jose checking in at 76 degrees. so this sea breeze making come back. the cooler wind direction this. was the scene, in fact, looking out toward the golden gate bridge. eventually catches up here, showing you the -- just what the presence of this pattern, temperatures come down easily. a good three to eight degrees from today's highs. hire's a live camera look. you can see the giants out there. we do have this. partly cloud this evening. cooler friday. major coming up this weekend as we head into sunday. temperatures mainly in the 60s and low 70s this weekend. on the satellite, a few high clouds approaching in the northern parts of the state and the bay area. the heat will be moving out. no more heat watchers and advisories. really cooling off by the weekend. in fact, here's a convict snapshot of the highs on sunday. the coolest day of the weekend, just talking about some 60s and some lower 70's out there.
