right now at 11:00, some movement in the right direction. that is what loved ones of a man who died in police custody three years ago are saying tonight as the public got big news last night on the eve of his desk. the alameda county d.a.'s office charged the three alameda officers connected to mario gonzalez's case with involuntary manslaughter. nbc bay area is in alameda. >> reporter: the officers could fashion up to four years if convicted, which isn't much for the people who came here tonight to lay flowers and remember mario, but they do say

it is something. a bigger turnout than the previous two years. her son encountered three officers. but she never lost faith. >> is something going to happen? >> reporter: it finally did. >> i just learned that our public accountability that were officers. >> reporter: current and tomorrower alameda police officers are being charged withennic voluntary manslaughter. the officers pinned mario down while trying to resane him for seven minutes. this comes after reopening the investigation into mario's case

have. in this major road closure could impact your weekend plans. caltrans shut down all westbound lanes of highway 37 in the north bay for road repairs. highway 37 is expected to stay closed until early monday morning. so take a look here at the red line that's the closure. the green is how you get around it. drivers will be redirected to highway 12, 29, and 121. this is the first of four closures planned. a lot of people use highway 37 to get to napa. we are following developing news that could impact thousands of commuters. the service between san francisco and sausalito has been suspended indefinitely officials say the issue was

discovered during the inspection. and the golden gate ferry is going to provide bus bridges during that closure. a pair of giant pandas are coming to the san francisco zoo. it's what a lot of people are talking about right now after mayor london breed announced it yesterday. but tonight, we're learning the late mayor ed lee also had a lot to do with it. jocelyn moran, did a team go to china to ask for those pandas? >> reporter: exactly. a couple of people who knew him and took part in a trip to china in 2017, exploring the area. they think the late mayor would be very happy. >> it is a great moment. it took seven years to do it, but you know, it would have made him very proud. >> reporter: saying the former deputy chief of staff for the late san francisco mayor, ed

lee. during our interview tonight, he held two panda cub animals. he got them during his trip in 2017. he tells us he was a part of a team that chose to go to china and deliver a very important letter from lee. also part of that trip is lee's white along as melinda franklin who was an executive at united airlines. >> i know it was important to him as a chinese american mayor as well as a citizen of san francisco that this was a great bridge between the two countries. >> reporter: the visit for the research base in giant panda breeding is one they won't forget. >> what struck me is how much joy it brought to the visitors to the research center. it was quite a beautiful experience in something that certainly we would want to replicate in san francisco.

>> reporter: that day could be soon. >> i have some exciting news. we have cute, cuddly beauties coming to our city. >> reporter: the mayor made the announcement on thursday during her multi-city tour through china in beijing. outlining plans to bring them to the san francisco zoo. the zoo needs to complete a panda enclosure, but people are already looking forward to seeing them. >> that is exciting. you want more animals in the zoo. soon it will be very exciting and fun for this guy. >> reporter: that will strengthen our ties with china, which is an important visitor market for san francisco. we couldn't be more excited. it may, if we get bigger. >> planning has begun for the panda enclosure. they will travel to san

francisco this week to meet with zoo engineers. these pandas are very cute. >> yeah, so cute. jocelyn, thank you so much. tonight we're learning three men have been arrested in connection to a string of car break-ins in san francisco. our nbc sky ranger was over the scene near golden gate park this morning. the area was blocked off as police investigate. the men are believed to be connected to several car burglaries across the city. they're facing several charges now including auto burglary, resisting arrest, and conspiracy. advocates are upset to close the federal prison in dublin. now they filed an order aimed at stopping the transfers. advocates rallied outside the scandal plagued prison this morning on monday. the bureau, which has been grappling with long history of sex way abuse. advocates filed a temporary

restraining order last night aimed at stopping the bureau to transfer the inmates ahead of the closure. >> they are saying they are scared. they are saying they're afraid. they are saying the food shipments have stopped. they are not receiving fresh food. >> advocates fear proper procedures are not being followed. they wouldn't comment on this issue saying the matter is tied up with the court. the man accused in a mass shooting at half moon bay returned to court after more than a year without a trial. zhou faced a judge in a redwood city courtroom today. the judge agreed to temporarily cease, that's when the trial date will likely be set. he's accused of shooting and killing seven people and injuring another back in january of 2023. it happened at two mushroom farms owned by california gardens. he was indicted by a grand jury and plead not guilty to all

charges related to the shooting spree. the san francisco police offices involved in the deadly shooting two years ago will not face charges the decision was made after an investigation by the attorney general's office. police say they were called to sfo after receiving reports that the man was armed and acting erratically. asking him to drop his weapons for 45 minutes. they opened fire. data appeared to have raised a gun at him. it turned out to be replica. the first to be investigated. that law mandates such investigation by the state's department of justice. well, there is more drama and controversy surrounding the high-profile congressional race in san mateo and santa clara

counties to replace congresswoman anna eshoo. there are new allegations of campaigning finance violates and unconditioned balance. >> reporter: the recount of the 16th congressional race will turn along with many watchers around the country, waiting to see if evan low or joe simitian or both will face him in a fayoff. he's taking legal action. the president of the santa clara county government attorney's association says he filed a new complaint with the federal election commission accusing sam liccardo of violating campaign finance law, writing in an parent attempt to skirt contribution limits and avoid negative public attention by personally calling for a recount, mr. liccardo and the other respondents appear to have orchestrated a scheme to use a newly formed super pac.

it's not yet. the staffer who called for the recount said this is a definition of frivolous, based on nothing, but conjecture and wishful thinking. he posted on 20 ballots that were properly excluded from the accounts. there are also a number of challenges from the campaign attorneys, adding some of the ballots in question are cast by people who registered the day of the election. >> no, they were not improperly excluded. the participants we have in place right now are to make sure every vote could wants. again, the observers will have their challenge and we're trying to determine if they are valid challenges. >> reporter: representative anna eshoo calling for financial transparency in the

recount. saying after learning the recently formed super pack count the vote is paying for it. what i do not have confidence in is coming from is it one generous donor? are there several donors? if so, how much have they contributed? are they special interests. is there the district. if the former san jose mayor believes voters have the right to know who is paying for the recount. his campaign manager responded yes. i asked if they know who is financially backing the super pack, paying for it, he says no. meanwhile the super pack will disclose their donor list by july 15 in accordance to fcc. ian cole, nbc news. we are back in 60 seconds. just ahead you've probably seen one on the road by now. but thousands of tesla

tonight tesla is having a serious problem with its new cybertruck. the company recalling 4,000 of them because of a malfunction with the accelerator pedal. >> sliding up. the way it is still hooked onto the pedal. it held the accelerator down 100%. >> reporter: this is video that went viral. illustrating the problem. you can see that pad for the accelerator pedal just come off. tesla says if dislodged, the petal could become trapped and that could cause the cybertruck to accelerate unintentionally. >> this is just it, the stock price has fallen about 40% this

year. meanwhile another problem for united airlines. this time it involves the well- known former coach for the giants. launching an investigation. video appears to show hensley mulands, sit investigate cockpit of the united charter mid flight. he was the giants hitting coach for their three world series title. he's now with the colorado rockies. he posted the video himself, but has since been deleted. he's sitting in the cockpit as you see there, using the controls. this is. u.n.'s cockpit visit happened at altitude. that caption on the post will lank what they say only certain people are allowed into the cockpit. united released a statement to us calling the video, "deeply disturbing." it went on to say, "as a clear violation of our safety and

operational policies, we've reported the incident to the faa and have withheld the pilots. united is facing scrutiny over series of recent mishaps. that indeludes the wheels falling off the flight right after takeoff at sfo. the santa rosa superintendent is stepping down in june. serving as superintendent since july of 2021 during her tenure. schools have dealt with high- profile incidents including a deadly stabbing last year at montgomery high school. in a separate incident, a 14- year-old was arrested for ripping out another student's fair during a fight. a student at cal is making history by being elected to the city council. >> i'm running on april 16 to

be your voice for city hall. >> so this is the campaign video for 221. the major of urban studies. she just declared victory in a special election for the berkeley council seat. that election happened on tuesday. and she is the first undergrad to be on the city council. here is a look at the results now, lunaparra leading james change. turnout was pretty low here with less than 500 total votes. you may be wondering why the low voter turnout. district seven covers the surrounding area there where a lot of students live. and all to vote in this district as we did speak to lunaparra during our 7:00 newscast. she says the population is what inspired her to run for office. >> district seven is an incredibly unique jurisdiction. it is 95% students, most of

whom are undergraduates,. and the median age is only 19 years old. i believe young people deserve in the say that the way the local government is run. >> despite the passion to represent their community right now, she says she doesn't have higher political goals. she plans on becoming a history teacher once she graduates. okay, so you probably noticed gas prices are on the rise again. so right now the average price of a gallon of gas in california is $5.45. that's more than 50 cents higher than what it was a month ago. in san francisco, yeah, even worse. 571 for a gallon of regular. that's $2 million than the

nationalism i put a lot. >> at this chevron in san jose, aaa says it is not unusual for gas prices begin to rise with the arrival of spring. as for what will happen next, it seems the recent rise in prices may be stalling. attributing that to lackluster demand for gasoline domestically along with decreasing oil prices, despite rising tensions in the middle east. well, i'm going to go ahead and turn to our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri now. a lot of people are really paying attention to the weekend and what it will be looking like. >> we are shaping up really excellent here in the forecast. all because of this area of high pressure. we have some rainfall, super close heading into washington and oregon. but this is moving in a just right spot to keep that rainfall allove. there will be some fog in the morning. let me show you more details on that and also when rainfall eventually comes back. okay. let's move it in to saturday morning. 7:00 and 8:00, we have that fog

returning throughout the bay. the chances of drizzle near the coastline. i see this clearing back by 10:30, 11:00 in the coastline, where we should actually get into some sunshine. that will make it a nicer day for us. as we roll in tomorrow morning, we'll roll in here at 51. south bay at 53. not too many differences between the micro climate. plenty of 50s for the east bay san francisco and north bay. daytime highs, warming up a couple of degrees, so check it out down here across the south bay. we're doing it, we are going back up to the upper 70s. 78 in san jose. 77 los gatos. for the east bay, a nice looking day at the concord livermore and danville, upper 70s. let's move it to the peninsula. it is not quite 70s, not even close for daly city and half moon bay, but you'll have the

sunshine. 73 in redwood. we have mid to upper 70s in santa rosa through sonoma and napa. similar weather like this as we head into sunday's forecast. then as we roll through next week, there is still the chance we could get into a little bit of a rainfall by thursday and friday. doesn't look like a lot. a little bit of snow for the sierra. the overall totals for next thursday and friday. a quarter inch and less. i'll keep close tabs on that. but focus in on the weekend as we are coming in with the sunshine there and san francisco especially by sunday's forecast and 68. we'll go to 80 on sunday. then eventually down to 625 next thursday . sunshine is free. >> yes. >> and that is going to be really good this weekend. >> i'm really looking forward to this weekend after the past weekend. >> i know. >> with all the rain.

welcome back. new california legislation could make finding an apartment easier for pet owners. but some landlords are pushing back. the proposed legislation would blanket no pet policies and prohibit landowners for charging chemical fees like for cats and dogs. the lack of pet-friendly units

are pushing renters to forego housing or relinquish beloved pets to overcrowded shelters. but some disagree. they say they are worried about the cost of repairs, liability over the potential dog bites and nuance issues. new rules for air traffic controllers are being rolled out by the faa. controllers will now be required to take 10 hours off between shifts and 12 hours shift. the goal is to address the fatigue issues. the new mandate comes after the series of high-profile close calls in a national controller shortage. the shortfall of air traffic controllers make worse by a pause of hiring between the forced overtime and the packed schedules for staff and some facilities. the mandate will take effect in 90 days. the giants were home while oakland was on th

the giants and a's in action tonight, but it wasn't the best night for both teams. the starting pitcher for the giants, blake snell. he has struggled through the early part of the season. tonight, sadly no different. in the fourth inning, he gives up a run scoring double to the diamondback designated hitter. snell gave up five runs on nine hits. the giants did get one run back in the bottom of the inning. there it is and where it is the only run as they win 17-1. the a's were in cleveland to take on the guardians as they started on a good note and they let off the game with the second home run of the year. came back to score ten unanswered runs
