tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  April 29, 2024 5:00am-6:01am PDT

5:00 am
we are tracking overnight developments in the middle east and word of a new israeli airstrike in gaza. we're live in washington with the latest including a new hopeful sign of progress in gaza. relief efforts
5:01 am
open again following a weekend long, hard closure. we have an update on the southbound interstate 680 and what you can expect during that morning commute and dodd when it comes to making it in the bay. is it better to buy or rent? we are live with new data that may have some homeowners second guessing those mortgage payments. this is today in the bay area. good monday morning. i'm ginger conejero saab laura garcia is off today, and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that commute coming up in just a bit with mike. but first, of course we got to start out with that forecast because it was a beautiful weekend. it was, and i'm hoping we've got a beautiful monday. it's going to be a great day today too. just a little bit warmer. but it's not going to be a big change from what we had over the past couple of days. so we're starting out right now at 50 degrees as we get a look at the north bay. san francisco's 52, and it's 53 in oakland. as we take a look at the trend for
5:02 am
today and our high temperatures that are headed for the low 70s for the afternoon, we'll see a high of 73 and fremont and hayward, a 71 actually in those areas, and 71 in novato, san francisco, up to 66 degrees. so very much like yesterday, tomorrow is a repeat with not much of a change in temperatures. we'll talk about when we do see some changes coming up. mike you have some welcome news to start out our monday. yeah. first of all, let's show some folks might have missed this weekend. it was fully closed. this right side here southbound 680 where they scraped off the old roadway surface. put on new on new pavement, some caging there to put some stability in the roadway and then finally some concrete. so it should be a much smoother drive for folks who are taking that this morning. and as the map shows, you can take that this morning, just a couple minutes before 4:00 in the morning. they did reopen this roadway. so as we look at the map, you see the speed sensors are lit back up once again. south 680 reopens again. no problem. highway 84 does see a little bit of slowing. saw a lot
5:03 am
of slowing there as well as 880 over the weekend. again, everybody can get back to their normal routes. same thing for highway 37. why is this the case? westbound was closed over the weekend. i don't know why it shows up closed in the eastbound direction. that is not closed. highway 37 also reopened fully this morning, so i'll get those sensors changed. but westbound, the closure over the weekend has cleared from that section as well. so a good start this monday morning. back to you. thanks a lot mike. developing right now in the middle east, israeli forces have reportedly launched a new deadly overnight strike in gaza today in the bay's brea jackson. live in washington this morning and brea. this all comes despite the new high stakes talks between president biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. that's right. good morning, marcus ginger. so that phone call taking place over the weekend, president biden discouraged israel's assault on rafah, a plea seemingly to have fallen on deaf ears. reuters reports. new israeli airstrikes killed at least 20 palestinians there overnight. more than 1 million people are reportedly
5:04 am
seeking refuge in rafah following months of attacks. now the attack comes just hours ahead of a hamas leader's meeting in cairo, egypt, to discuss a potential cease fire. it's unknown if today's air strike by israel will have an impact on those negotiations. but back to sunday's conversation between president biden and netanyahu. it comes less than a month after the two leaders held a phone call after an israeli airstrike killed seven humanitarian workers. and brie. when it comes to those humanitarian aid workers, the organization they were affiliated with is making an announcement this morning. so, mark, it's world central kitchen is set to resume its humanitarian operations in gaza following that deadly israeli airstrike that killed those workers. officials with the organization say they have more than 200 trucks carrying enough supplies for almost 8 million meals ready to enter gaza through the rafah crossing and from jordan, world10 show
5:05 am
kitchen says it's also looking to add new sea routes to bring supplies into the region. following the airstrike nearly a month ago, israeli forces took full responsibility for killing the aid workers, saying it was the result of soldiers mistaking them for hamas gunmen. the aid organization, founded by chef jose andres, says ended all deliveries of food and other critical supplies immediately after that attack. marcus ginger, thanks a lot for that update. brie jackson from washington. well, it's 504 for you right now and new this morning. it is not often you get to listen to a conversation involving two former presidents and a sitting president. well, it's happening on the smartless podcast latest episode. this is featuring president joe biden and former president bill clinton as well as barack obama. now, in one clip, mr. biden talks about gun reform when asked about the issues voters should be focusing on. we're going to make sure that we do something about gun violence in this country. yes, the idea that we allow assault weapons to be
5:06 am
sold with magazines with 100 rounds, it's just bizarre. the democrats never said we want to take your guns away. absolutely not. you never said that. you said, by the way, we got to be smart about what's don't need to kill a deer with an ar 15. the now former president donald trump, has said that if elected, he would undo restrictions implemented by president biden. the podcast was recorded when biden was in new york city. this is for the three presidents fundraiser at radio city music hall that interview dropped today on all podcast platforms. new signs this morning. making it in the bay is not getting any easier for first time home buyers. today in the bay's bob redell is live in dublin and bob, the latest data indicates that a surge in home prices has happened compared to this time last year. correct. good morning to you, ginger. the california association of realtors just released new numbers. we'll put them up on your screen that show that in march, the median price of a home here in the bay area
5:07 am
was almost $1.4 million. that's a 15.5% jump than what the median price was the year before. in march of 2023. it's also a sign that prices have recovered from the dip they took in the fall of 2022, following the federal reserve's interest rate hike. experts say buyers have grown tired of waiting for those interest rates to come down. they have come off the sidelines but are having to obviously pay more than they want when they're buying a home, and there's not much inventory out there, just a two month supply. the median time for houses to sell here in the bay area is just under two weeks. now, as home prices go up, renting becomes more attractive. a new study from bank rate backs this up. the financial website has found that renting is now cheaper than buying a home. a home in all, 50 of the largest us metro areas, the average mortgage payment was just over 2700 a month, while the average rent was around $1,980 a month.
5:08 am
that's a gap of close to 37% in the bay area. the gap is much greater between owning and renting a ranges from around 160% to 190. bank rate also found that in 21 metro areas, the average monthly cost of owning a home is at least 50% more expensive than renting. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell today in the bay. thanks a lot bob. very interesting stuff there. excuse me, it is 507 for you this morning. a south bay deputy is recovering. this is after a crash in a high speed chase which also injured four innocent people. this happened yesterday on commodore drive and king road in san jose. that's where a patrol car struck an suv. now all four passengers and the deputy suffered non-life threatening injuries. the whole incident started when deputies say that they actually tried to pull over that speeding car, and the suspect took off. at one point, he also rammed a patrol car, then later slowed his car
5:09 am
with speed strip speed strips and soon after arrested him. now the face he faces, that person in that car faces multiple charges, including driving a stolen vehicle. and happening today, south bay leaders will join the salvation army to unveil a new housing project. the nonprofit will renovate the emmanuel house overnight shelter on fourth street and build another housing complex on the same site. earlier this month, santa clara county supervisors approved $4 million for the project. the salvation army says people now living at emmanuel house will be relocated to temporary units during construction. it's 509 now. we're taking a live look at san francisco. it was a beautiful weekend in the city. carry a little bit windy, honestly, a little chilly at times, but as you're saying, hopefully it will continue. yeah, we are going to still have the mild temperatures, but at times the winds will pick up, especially in san francisco and around the coastline. we're going to see our start to the morning in the
5:10 am
upper 40s. we're seeing that a very cool one in palo alto. it's 48 degrees 54 in san jose and 49 in livermore. let's head to brentwood with a look at what to expect throughout the day. with some upper 50s this morning, we'll see that at 8:00, at noon at 69 degrees and a nice warm up once again with highs in the mid 70s. and we're looking at a high of 73 in san jose, 66 in san mateo and novato will see high there of 71 degrees. we'll talk about the rest of the week coming up. mike has been trying to find some lower gas prices. yeah. and there's just that one in fremont. the fliers on osgood, the lowest price in union city and around the rest of alameda county, about 4.79 for 79 at abe on mission boulevard. that's the one we can verify through gasbuddy.com sunnyvale is lowest is national petroleum for 89 at their shop on old san francisco road, and nothing under five bucks for san mateo city or county. 504 is the lowest i find at gas and shop on east fourth avenue. that's their
5:11 am
best, folks. thank you for sharing the around the bay. we're looking at smooth speed sensors. the only red you see is over out of the altamont pass. that would be 580. once you get past grant line road, everything's at speed 680. the middle number reopened and at speed as you head down from the dublin interchange and highway 37 reopened as well over, over after over the weekend closure there and the bay bridge not yet showing that morning commute back to you. well, coming up on today in the bay, sometimes made in america. isn't ginger good stuff to watch out for scott plus. hi barbie, this morning, olympic gold medalist kristi yamaguchi is telling us what it feels like to have her very own barbie doll
5:12 am
this van just hit .
5:13 am
i thought i was dead. after the accident, i was in a lot of pain and i decided that i needed to. i called jacoby & meyers they had their own dream team. they took care of me like a . i would recommend you call jacoby & meyers they really went to bat for me.
5:14 am
stay planner. we're starting out at 45 degrees at 6:00 this morning. it's all clear and lots of sunshine today as we have a nice little warming trend again for this afternoon. we'll be in the mid 70s at 4:00. also breezy at times. we'll take a look at the rest of our microclimate forecast that's coming up in a few minutes. and right now we're looking at fremont smooth drive on the roadways. those headlights heading south to the south bay. and also those flags. i don't know if you can make it right below where it says 880. oh, that's a smooth, easy drive flag just hanging there a little windier last week, but we'll check how things are in the
5:15 am
altamont pass coming up. well good morning. very happy monday to you. the markets did well last week nasdaq was up better than 4. a lot of companies are reporting earnings this week including apple and amazon. san francisco based williams-sonoma got into trouble with the ftc over accusations it's made in america. products were not. it's paying a $3 billion fine. it's not the first time the company which also owns pottery barn, has got in trouble for that. tesla shares are up after a surprise visit by elon musk to china. here's a picture he posted of a visit with the country's premier. musk says china has cleared the way for tesla's so-called full self-driving on its roads. now remember, it's not. on friday, the department of homeland security announced a new ai safety board. musk is not on it. neither is mark zuckerberg. the heads of microsoft, nvidia and openai did make the cut. speaking of openai, we know the maker of chatgpt is working on a
5:16 am
. version five of. best guess is chatgpt for was programed with more than a trillion data points. vacuuming up wikipedia articles, new york times articles, anything programmers could get their hands on. estimates say they'll need ten times as much for gpt five, which makes some in the business concerned they're running out of data. one solution feed ai data from one to the other ai. we spoke to an ai expert about that on our program press here over the weekend. it sounds gross, pablo, but you know what? that reminds me of is mad cow disease, when you feed a cow a cow, you end up with bovine encephalitis, this is a an ai producing data that other ai would use as its data, just sounds like the beginning of a scary movie. yeah. and, you know, it can go really, really poorly. like, the, ai feeding on
5:17 am
itself. it can get lost somewhere and lose, lose track of reality and start spouting garbage, so you need to control that process very carefully to make sure that it is actually improving the model and not just leading to nowhere. the washington post this morning reports meta is considering layoffs at facebook at its oversight board, the group that polices content. facebook created the oversight board in 2019 as an independent body that could overrule the company's decisions on blocking and banning and. the federal open market committee meets this week to discuss interest rates. i mentioned this last only because everybody is sure they're not going to change anything. they're certainly not going to lower interest rates to remind you, they raise interest rates to fight inflation. then they don't lower them until they see inflation go down, which has to be the economy sinking. we're going to get a jobs number this friday. we expect to be very, very good. and this goes back to the good news is bad news thing. yeah we talk about that all the time. just like you want them to
5:18 am
go lower. but then that means something bad has to happen. so it's like oh and nothing bad is happening. and just like in in bob's report, he was saying, you know what people who were waiting for those interest rates to go down, they're just tired of it. they're like, we're sitting on the sidelines. people are, you know what? let's chat more about that. at 615. they got it. you've got an interesting point there. yeah. there you go. stick around. all right scott 517 for you right now. and the live shows for the voice begin next week. but you know what? tonight the playoff round will determine the final six singers who will be one note closer to victory. now, here in the bay area, of course, we are rooting for our favorite local duo. i'm talking about justin and jeremy garcia. look at us, but also look at each other. oh good guys, you guys are brothers. have fun with each other. take this moment and look at each other in the eye like, yo, can you believe that we're here right now? yeah if you haven't been watching, you are missing out. those are the millbrae twins brothers right there. originally started out on team dan and shay, but you saw right there with reba mcentire. they were actually saved by reba during the battle rounds. so how
5:19 am
far will season 25 take justin and jeremy garcia? well, you can find out by watching the voice at 8:00 tonight. go, j and j oh, i like that. yeah. j and j from the bay. yeah. oh i love it. okay, well, you know what? training for you this morning, a bay area gold medal figure skater is talking about her ties with the world champion of dolls. barbie is launching a kristi yamaguchi doll as part of its inspiring women line, marking the start of asian american pacific islander heritage month. this wednesday. yamaguchi says she will not take the honor lightly, knowing the impact it may have on future generations really meant a lot that they wanted to get an accurate, like likeness of me. we want kids to see themselves and to be able to identify with their heroes. well. the dolls outfit faithfully recreates the one yamaguchi wore when she won gold at the 1992 winter olympics. she says that was the
5:20 am
only time she's ever worn it in competition. i wonder, is it in a museum somewhere? mike? i know you know her well, she said. with her competition, right? yeah. so i've not seen kristi wear it anywhere else either. just letting you know, walking around, i don't know, ask her. yeah, because i'm going to talk with her as part of our activities internally. we have an employee and it will be a talk with kristi yamaguchi. so maybe we get to ask her at that point. yeah, we'll let folks know. i still remember when she won that in 92. i was two years old. no, i'm just kidding. i still give her a hard time about the hair being so high. and i'm like, well, mine's there. keeping it alive when they recreate you. mike. there in the bay area it's a bay area thing. that's right. hello, ken. all right, well, speaking of bay area, let's talk about that weather because it has been nice. anyone visiting you welcome. yeah, it has been really nice. little cool. and this is the kind of weather we should see for the end of april. and it continues for the next couple of days. let's get a look live at the bay bridge from san
5:21 am
francisco. we are going to have some slight warming ahead from tomorrow through thursday. temperatures just coming up a few degrees. not a whole lot. our inland valleys will be in the mid 70s and low 80s. and then the weekend things change again. it gets cooler and breezy. the 7-day forecast is now coming up at the bottom of the screen. check it out as we take a look at our day planner for san jose, where we will see a nice cool start to the morning in the mid 50s. we're headed for the low 70s this afternoon, and just briefly seeing those temperatures coming up to about 7273 degrees. and then it's also going to be windy. we talked about how windy it was along the coastline over the weekend. and still that continues today as we go toward noon. you're seeing point reyes 39, 29mph winds there and almost 40 mile per hour wind in half moon bay, san francisco, 43 through the evening. so it will be gusty once again as our high temperatures head for the low to mid 60s. we'll see some low 70s
5:22 am
for the interior valleys with livermore today up to 7375 in martinez and in concord and santa rosa, as well as much of the rest of the bay area will see a slight warming trend. the peak of those temperatures will be on thursday and the weekend. it goes way back down. we'll only see highs in the mid 60s for the weekend, so a lot of changes ahead and those changes do come with some rain that we could see on saturday and possibly in some spots on sunday. i think near the coastline we could see some scattered showers for the weekend. so just a heads up on this monday that the weekend is looking much cooler and could be a bit wet. mike, you spotted something in sunol? yeah, we're over here on south 680. important note actually coming into sunol it reopened right on schedule. maybe a couple minutes ahead of time. there's now a crash 680 at 84 waiting for detail, but i don't see any slowing just yet. i do see slowing out of the altamont pass, which is pretty typical pattern. gusty conditions reported at times on the chp blotter, but not a problem as
5:23 am
far as any incidents. vasco road also at speeds. so you're fine coming out of contra costa county, heading down toward 580. in alameda county across the benicia. carquinez bridge is a smooth drive, but a little slowing shows up on west 37, which is open again this morning, ready for that morning commute, which is just kicking in back to you. thanks a lot, mike. 522 for you right now, helping patients living with parkinson's. so next here on today in the bay, we're going to talk about a new app. one local tech company has now developed. and that's going to help doctors better understand th disease. we'll atta
5:24 am
5:25 am
5:26 am
area company is using technology and apple watches to help diagnose problems for people living with a disease. strive pd is an app developed by san francisco's ruined labs. now with an apple watch, the app can actually distinguish wish tremors from parkinson's and movements caused instead by drug side effects. the company says that that information can actually help doctors better manage the patient's symptoms and diagnoses. we are really looking at how do we harness brain data through wearables? in our case, it's the apple watch to really get a better understanding of what's happening with folks that have different brain diseases, strive pd gives you some data that you can kind of gut check yourself
5:27 am
and say, you know what's really happening here? what am i really seeing? and it really helps you prepare for doctor's appointments. now, house lawmakers in december passed a national plan to end parkinson's act. it calls on the federal government to create new project to prevent the cure, to prevent and cure. i should say that disease. the senate is still debating that same legislation. well, next, top stories we're following today, including devastation across the midwest, the search and rescue efforts underway following a weekend of powerful storms which spawned tornadoes. i'm kris sanchez at stanford, where protesters continue. but today they have something to weigh. they have been notified that they could be expelled or arrested. we'll talk about the protests happening

5:30 am
some college students are now pushing the limits when it comes to their continuing protest over the war in the middle east. we are live this morning at one bay area school, threatening to draw the line in the sand. a heartbroken community sharing their grief. the new details on a fiery crash in the east bay that killed a family of four, and the lives lost in the tragedy, and a live look outside. and kerry has been telling us this morning it should be a pleasant start to the workweek. she is actually tracking the spring warming
5:31 am
trend, and when it should peak in your neighborhood. this is today in the. bay. good monday morning. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington, and i'm ginger conejero saab. laura garcia is off on this monday. but as you said that, marcus, that warm up, that's what i've been looking for so long, folks. i know that's right. you're all just. kari hall is tracking what we can expect. how true is that? warm up. okay, it's true for the valleys, not for you in san francisco. unfortunately, you're not going to see much of a warm up. but we are starting out with temperatures in oakland at 53 degrees as you're stepping out and it's 48 in san rafael, we do have a mostly clear sky all around the bay area and in hayward. as you're heading out. it's in the low 50s and it's going to gradually warm up as we go throughout. today will be in the mid 60s at noon and eventually making it up to about 71 in hayward and in san jose, 73, also 73 for morgan hill and
5:32 am
san martin. the warmest temperature we'll see will be in fairfield at 77. so we'll talk more about the changes ahead. coming up. mike, how's it looking now in sunol? yeah, actually, you know what? let's talk about getting to sunol. we can do that because south 680 reopened this morning right on schedule, 84, which was an option over the weekend. still an option, but not as heavily traveled. and in sunol there is a crash. a tesla crash reported because it's a fleet vehicle. that's why i pointed out. so they're going to have to have a crew head out there from tesla and fremont. shouldn't be long. and it's at the on ramp or the connector ramp there not affecting 680 itself. watch out of livermore. i'll track that out of pleasanton as well. a smooth drive for highway 37, which also reopened right on time. and so right on time we have that slowing scheduled, not scheduled. it happens coming out of their at mare island. same thing for highway four, a little build in toward pittsburg and bay point. no problem at the toll plaza, but the volume builds a bit at the bay bridge. back to you. thanks, mike. and protests. political protests on the stanford campus are reaching
5:33 am
a critical juncture. some students are now at risk of getting kicked out of school or even arrested. yeah. today in the bay's kris sanchez live for us this morning. and, chris, some of those students really have a big decision to make here . this is a really big decision. they're sleeping now here in the tents at white plaza on the stanford campus. but things are going to start getting serious, not just for their messaging but also for their personal consequences. now, there are about two dozen tents here at white plaza, where the students and some non-students continue to protest against the action in gaza. they're calling for a cease fire there, and they're calling for a divestment from israel. a recent student election showed that the majority of students polled wanted stanford to divest from israel. as for the personal consequences, it's a big decision. i would like the university to cut all of its ties to israel, to cut all of its ties to companies that aid israel in, funding the war
5:34 am
crimes they commit against the palestinian people. that was a stanford student, but also at sonoma state. over the weekend, students gathered the protest as well, pitching tents and holding a rally. cal poly humboldt as you might know, they joined the protest early on, and the campus is now shut down for the rest of the semester as protesters occupied two buildings there at usc, the famed tommy trojan statue was vandalized with the word say no to genocide. the main graduation ceremony is canceled and nearly 100 people were arrested last week. now at ucla, the protesters there, they clashed with one another on campus. at some point, things got physical between the two sides. demonstrators did rush security gates until police were called in. now today, san francisco state students plan to hold a rally and gather the protests as well. they have the
5:35 am
support of some faculty members who formed a group called justice for palestine. they will be joining that later on today, and we'll bring that to you in our midday news at stanford. kris sanchez today in the bay. thanks a lot, chris. well, a heartbroken community is mourning the loss of a family of four killed in a fiery crash. some 200 classmates, teachers and friends gathered yesterday at valle vista park in pleasanton. they were there to remember the george family, who died last wednesday when their electric car slammed into a tree on foothill road and burst into flames. friends identify the family as the father to ruin mom renzi and their sons rowan and aaron. rowan was an eighth grade at hart middle school, and aaron was a second grader at dolan elementary. families with the students at each school, they're just devastated. i still can't believe nobody can believe that they're gone. he called my son just two hours before it all
5:36 am
happened. police say speed may have played a role, but that investigation into why the driver lost control, control is ongoing. angry activists are raising new concerns over the texting scandal rocking antioch police department. dozens gathered outside yesterday of the department headquarters. they fear some of the officers involved in the scandal have been reinstated and they're upset about what they believe is a lack of transparency. we don't know which officers have been reinstated and which officers have been rewarded for their misconduct with a years long paid vacation, sending gorillas and monkeys and other racist memes. are we safe with those guys? well, the department did not respond to our request for comment. activists were also marking ten years since a police assault incident involving a young black man who later took his own life. well the
5:37 am
congregation in san francisco's glide memorial church is undergoing some difficult days. this after the recent loss of their leader and founder, reverend cecil williams. during the first sunday service since his passing, church leaders reflected on his impact. thank goodness that the right reverend cecil williams never asked anybody to fill his shoes. he only asked that you show up as you. yeah, because if he saw something in you, he knew that was the thing that you need to lead from. the longtime pastor and civil rights leader died one week ago today. now there is a celebration of life. it is scheduled for sunday, may 12th at glide at 1 p.m. new video shows the aftermath left behind from deadly tornadoes in oklahoma. at least five people, including a baby, have died. about 100 others have been hurt. now the tornadoes caused damage to homes and businesses. the governor there is issuing an
5:38 am
executive order declaring a state of emergency in 12 counties, as crews work to clear debris and assess damage. meteorologist kerry hall is tracking conditions there this morning. and kerry, there's more severe weather that's expected on the way, so it's moving to a different area. this storm system has moved to the east. you can see oklahoma is now in the clear. they'll have time to assess today and try to get an idea of how strong those tornadoes were. now the threat of tornadoes has moved into the south. the gulf coast states around louisiana under a tornado watch right now, and we'll see most likely another round of some severe weather heading across parts of the ohio valley over the next, say, about 12 to 16 hours. now for the bay area it is all nice and quiet. we do have some rain just to our north and some snow for the upper elevations. moving through oregon, and we're going to see this eventually moving off towards the east. the bay area will continue with some clear conditions, but although we've
5:39 am
had some gusty winds, we'll begin a warming trend starting tomorrow and from tomorrow into thursday, we'll have some slightly warmer temperatures where our valleys will be in the mid 70s, even a few low 80s. but the weekend it cools down once again and even a chance of rain. so we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike is saying for now, the commute looks pretty smooth. it does look pretty smooth, and in fact the metering lights not registered on in this traffic system. so that's a smooth drive. but the volume has really bumped up over the last, i'd say 90s. we see many more cars showing than i did when i was over there at the traffic center. we're seeing a little slowing on the incline again and some slowing, inching close to the san francisco exits. that's the indicator of why they would turn those metering lights on. we're looking over to highway 37 and highway four behind me. starting those monday morning builds as well. so no surprises. although a crash is registered over there heading south down towards san rafael, san anselmo. we'll check on that with chp. i'll let you know if that is a problem. now we're looking ahead toward what may be an issue, at least as folks get off the freeway at the
5:40 am
