it is monday morning. so glad you are starting your week with us. >> good to see you guys this morning. >> we've got a lot to get to. including the outbreak of devastating tornadoes over the weekend. this is a live look at sulphur, oklahoma. it's dark there, but you can see the downtown area decimated. after multiple tornadoes reduced buildings there to rubble. >> more than 120 twisters were reported across the region over the weekend. at least five people were killed. about 100 others hurt. >> and as mentioned, there is more severe weather on the way. heavy rain bringing extreme flooding to a large swath of the country. al's got his full forecast. we'll get right of to him in a moment. but first, jesse kirsch joins us from hard-hit sulphur this weekend. good morning to you, jesse. >> reporter: savannah and hoda, good morning, unflrntly this weekend's weather proving deadly. one person died in iowa, and officials in oklahoma say four people died in this state,

including an infant. one of the deaths was here in the small city of sulphur. population roughly 5,000. this is what's left of this auto body shop, off to the side a utility pole snapped on top of a pile of debris. this morning, this community is in pieces. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: this morning devastation in oklahoma. >> downtown sulphur is destroyed. >> reporter: sulphur, oklahoma, population roughly 5,000 taking a direct hit. the harrowing nighttime twister captured on camera. locals say this was the small city's historic downtown. now it's been reduced to rubble. roofs are gone. buildings destroyed. this mail truck tilting on a pile of debris. >> it honestly looked like someone just dropped a bomb on this area because it's just -- it's gone. >> reporter: officials say at least 100 people are injured from relentless storms across the state.

>> you just can't believe the destruction. >> reporter: def stations stretching from texas to the midwest, with torrential rain, tornado reports in college station and trinity, texas. and at least 120 tornadoes reported across multiple states. much of minden, iowa ripped to shreds. officials say this home is in the middle of a street. it is supposed to be yards away on this foundation. and you can see it is hardly the only building badly damaged. the community now comes together to pick up the pieces. >> when something is that bad, you almost go a little numb. now it is just a matter of getting up and going forward. >> reporter: back here in sulphur, a clear day today and tomorrow. there is the potential for marginal risk of severe weather on wednesday, which they do not need here. savannah?

>> jesse kirsch, thank you. >> guys, unfortunately, you can see a long line all the way to texas. that's where we're looking for. from louisiana, texas, arkansas, where we have severe thunderstorm watches out for heavy showers and thunderstorms. the strongest threats in the mid-morning. we're looking at significant flooding from texas to lake charles, louisiana. we've got a risk of severe weather from corpus christi, jackson, on into new orleans. then during the day today, that system moves to the east. tomorrow a new frontal system starts to develop, we're looking at a severe threat stretching from minnesota to texas. and this one area from sioux falls to kansas city, the risk of two inch hail or more. and then tornadoes. and on into wednesday, another severe risk breaks out in south central plains. that same area, oklahoma, that jesse was just talking about. wichita, kansas, a risk for more severe weather there. damaging hail, again, tornadoes possible.

strong ef-2 or stronger. and we're expecting rainfall rates in this lower to the lower gulf, two of three irchls per hour, and there could be some flooding. summer is arriving. we could see some records with temperatures anywhere from 15 to 25 degrees above average. we will detail that coming up in the next half hour. guys? >> al, thank you. we now move to the mounting chaos over the war in gaza. it's spreading on college campuses here in the u.s. protests and counter protests intensified from coast to coast over this weekend, leading to hundreds of arrests. we have two reports. we'll start with nbc's erin mclaughlin from columbia here in new york. erin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. over the weekend there were police crackdowns on multiple campuses nationwide, with more than 250 either arrested or detained. this morning, the protests show no signs of slowing down. this morning tension on college

campuses growing and spreading. pro-palestinian protesters arrested at virginia tech overnight after they failed to disburse following warnings from police. the university saying it recognized that the situation had the increasing potential to become unsafe. the heated conflicts now playing out at dozens of schools nationwide. with schools demanding their schools divest from israel. over the weekend, fights breaking out at ucla, dueling protesters clashing on campus. police officers setting up barriers to separate the demonstrations. >> i would not feel safe being on campus. it really makes me feel even being back here pity for the students who have to deal with this every day. >> reporter: also in los angeles at usc, the school's famed trojan statue vandalized. the protests popping up from the west coast to the southwest.

at arizona state university, to the midwest. at indiana university. >> i never believed it would happen here in bloomington, indiana. it was terrifying. >> reporter: in washington university in st. louis, where 80 were arrested this weekend. to the east coast. at northeastern over 100 people were arrested. ending that encampment. at harvard protesters put up a palestinian flag where an american flag would fly. and while demonstrators remain at m.i.t., the president wants encampments shut down. >> it is creating a potential magnet for disruptive outside protesters. >> reporter: in columbia and new york, the encampment still stands, despite the police crackdown earlier at which month which ignited campus protests nationwide. many jewish students across college campuses fearing for their safety.

>> the atmosphere that's created here, you feel threatened as a jewish student. allowing this to happen on college campuses is disgusting. >> reporter: meanwhile, thousands of miles away in an encampment in gaza, displaced palestinians send a message of gratitude to the students. this morning columbia university put out a statement that its talks with protesters had failed and that it would not be divesting from israel, which was their key demand, it's calling on the students to leave their encampment voluntarily, something which of course seems unlikely, columbia's president reassuring students there will still be a commencement, noting many of the students missed their high school graduation because of the pandemic. sf f? >> erin mclaughlin, thank you very much. we're following breaking news in the middle east. the secretary of state arrived in the region to discuss cease-fire efforts in gaza after president biden applied new pressure in a phone call with israel's benjamin netanyahu. keir simmons joins us with that part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. amid intense negotiations here in saudi arabia and across the

region, secretary blinken speaking here a short time ago describing israel's offer to hamas as extraordinarily generous. and saying a deal between saudi arabia, the u.s. and israel is potentially very close to completion. this morning secretary blinken in saudi arabia with a deal over the war in gaza and release of hostages on a knife edge. hamas releasing a second hostage video in less than a week, including 64-year-old american israeli keith siegal. his niece holding on to hope. >> i think that now is the moment. i think i have faith that we can do a deal now. >> reporter: siegel, one of five americans still believed to be held in gaza. israel's army is poised to launch an assault on rafah in gaza. now home to more than a million palestinians.

alleged affair with stormy daniels, charges he denies. >> there's no case here whatsoever, it's a disgrace. >> reporter: court proceedings resume tomorrow but are off again on wednesday, when the former president is planning a campaign swing to key battlegrounds, wisconsin and michigan, this morning, a new cnn poll showing trump with a lead over president biden, but overall the race remains very close. other polls, including nbc's, finding the two closer. and with president biden leading in campaign cash, sources tell nbc news trump met for break faction this weekend with his former gop rival florida governor ron desantis who said he plans to help fund raise. on friday in an interview with howard stern, president biden . neither campaign has formally committed. >> gabe there at the white house, thank you. an said he'd be happy to debate trump. the presidential debate commission scheduled three debates beginning in september but neither campaign has committed, craig.

are still there this morning. but now student protesters may be facing a critical moment. stanford leaders over the weekend handed out leaflets letting protesters know they could be expelled or possibly arrested. right now, there is no specific timeline. let's take a look now at some other top stories that we are following. i'm bob redell in dublin. the california association of realtors has released new numbers that shows the median price of a home here in the bay area is now nearly $1.4 million. that's 15.5% higher than the median price for the year before. in march of 2023. it's also a sign that prices have recovered from the dip they took in the fall of 2022, following the federal reserve's interest rate hike. and we've got that monday morning forecast for you with meteorologist kari hall. kari, we are going to see a lot of sunshine today. it continues the nice weather we had from over the weekend. more of that today with highs in the low 70s. now we are going to be warming

he's feeling well enough to get back out in front of the public. they will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment center tuesday. >> they have been through such a great deal, and it's been difficult for everyone involved. but for the public, this is hugely reassuring. >> reporter: the palace releasing a new photo of the king and queen camilla, nearly one year since his coronation last may. but no update on the health of princess kate who announced last month she's undergoing preventative cancer treatment. their health scares bringing the king and his daughter-in-law closer. the king granting kate a historic honor, the first royal to receive a title that recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions to public service. kate, married into the royal family 13 years ago today. the prince and princess of wales celebrating their wedding anniversary privately. releasing this picture to mark the day. >> they are going through one of the most challenging periods of their married life. but we know she really relies on william.

first jesse kirsch in hard-hit sulphur, oklahoma with the latest. jesse, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. we know of at least 5 people who have been killed. one person reported dead in iowa. according to officials. and authorities in oklahoma say four people died in this state, including an infant. one of the deaths was here in sulpu h -- sulphur, oklahoma. you can see this is what's left of an auto body shop exposed to the sky. there is wires dangling here. off to the side, you can see this utility pole is snapped and tilted and there is debris on the ground here as well. this is hardly the only area that was hit hard. even overnight, we saw more bad weather. heavy rain and tornado reports in parts of texas. stretching back to friday, multiple states had tornado reports. since friday, we have seen 120 tornado reports. you can see the images out of nebraska. iowa also hit hard as well, iowa as well. stretching down to texas.

i appreciate. >> you had a big reaction at south by southwest where the movie premiered. first of all, when you have a movie come out, you don't know. sometimes you don't know how it will turn out. you act in it. you are not sitting there for the edit. i think you were the producer of this film. but even so. but here it is you're in "south by southwest." tell me about that. you looked like you were getting emotional, verklempt. >> i was more than verklempt. nick saw me backstage before i went on. i was not okay. i was not together. >> nervous? >> no, overjoyed. and honored and moved. i was so moved by the reaction. and, you know, you work so hard on these films. i poured so much love, so much life experience into this film. we were on an unbelievable team. my teammate and my cast. also, our director michael showwalter. i knew how i felt about the film. i've seen the film. i knew i loved it. but to be able to have an audience feel it, too.

part because, you know, sort of trying to achieve that level of intimacy, i think in such a sort of difficult space as an auto-diggs room is really, really hard. but, i mean, you can speak to this more, but i think it was about the try and see sort of two people in closer proximity with each other, there was a lightness, a closeness, a. >> a playfulness, that was one of the things we found. in an audition room, it's so hard, someone's trying to get a job, and that's -- >> terrifying. >> there's so much pressure there, so when you kind of -- but making movie is a lot of pressure too. you want to know if somebody in that space, what happens when they're asked to do something that might be uncomfortable, do they open up or close down and nick opened up, we had a great time together. so, then, it became clear that we had chemistry. it worked for us. we made a movie and it's happening. >> it's all happening. what i like about it, you're in the movie, you're just turned 40-year-old, you're 25. and that's actually that kind of

it tells the story of holocaust survivors that find love in the strangest of places. melanie lynskey brought the story to life. after speaking with one of them decades later. >> i never have done anything like this in my life, and i was not prepared for how overwhelmed i would be listening to your memories. >> who wouldn't be? at least if they have one of these. >> first of all, what a moving, beautiful, wrenching story this is. tell me about how you became introduced to this story and why you decided this is something for you. >> oh, my goodness. i just out of the blue got an e-mail. it was an offer to do a show. and i thought, okay, i maybe have time to read one of these scripts, and i just couldn't stop. i was so moved by the story. i wasn't familiar with the book at that point. and i just couldn't believe it was a real story. >> yeah.

so how close to the real story is it? because i was watching some of this film. it is so wrenching to even imagine in auschwitz, one of the most horrific places that a couple was able to find enough love to survive that. >> it's incredible. i mean, it is all based on one man's testimony. but, yeah, they were married until his wife passed away in melbourne many, many years later. so it is kind of an incredible heart-breaking, beautiful story. >> what's striking about this story is it's difficult to watch this history really unfolding. but here we sit in 2024, and we are hearing some horrible things that are happening again. and i think it's -- this is really striking i think a lot of people that it's coming out at this time. what are you seeing there? >> yeah.

i think empathy. empathy is just something that there needs to be more of in the world. so i do think it's important to keep telling stories and reminding people this is very recent history. >> yeah. >> you know? this is -- there are people who were in the camps who are still alive. >> and to get into the head space of this writer, who is still alive, i should add, did you have a chance to meet with her to discuss or was it one of those things, you said, i'm going to play her and, you know, let that be. >> she was very involved, which i really appreciated. like the wig was a surprise to me, but she has blonde hair, so she saw all the costumes. she approved all the costumes. she had a lot of input, that was really fun actually. >> she did, yeah. >> let's talk about you as an actress. first of all, i just love you. i sat with you and visited for a couple minutes before. i was like, i think we would be friends. >> i was thinking the same. >> you have such a beautiful life. you have a 5-year-old. >> yes. >> and what made you decide that that was something that you
