community. one of the dead is a deputy u.s. marshal. the other three, local officers. they were serving a warrant at a home when a suspect opened fire. a total of eight officer were struck by bullets. a suspected shooter also dead. president biden put out a statement late last night, calling the fallen cops heroes, while also calling for gun control. michelle bowden from our charlotte affiliate has the story. >> reporter: in charlotte, this video streamed on facebook live capturing the terrifying moments when gunfire erupted. officials confirm eight officers were struck. >> stood we lost some heroes that were out simply trying to keep our community safe. >> i asked somebody on the street what happened. and he said they're shooting. somebody's shooting. >> reporter: according to police, a local task force comprised with officers from multiple agencies was serving a warrant on galloway drive when they were engaged by active

gunfire from a suspect. at least one suspect was found deceased in the house and police are questioning two other occupants of the home. >> ne k >> they knew what they were going into and still held this own in an attempt to apprehend the suspect. >> reporter: the mayor saying she is a deeply saddened. local schools went into lockdown and many surrounding streets were closed leading to traffic problems in the city. this is the fifth marshal to be killed since 2011. more universities are cracking down on campus protesters overnight. demonstrations against the israel-hamas war continue to grow across the country. in new york city, columbia university is now suspending students who defied orders to vacate their protest camp. our liz kreutz has the latest. >> reporter: at university of texas austin, police one by one detaining pro-palestinian

protesters. law enforcement tying up this demonstrator by their hands, dragging them out of their encampment while screaming. the university says protesters ignored repeated directives from administration, and the majority of the protesters are believed to be unaffiliated with the school. so far, more than a thousand people have been arrested since the demonstrations across college campuses against the war in gaza began. at ucla, hundreds of students and faculty walking out of class in support of the protests. these students here, there were hundreds of them. they were not able to get into the encampment. they are attempting to storm one of the buildings here on campus. >> reporter: at columbia university, students telling administrators they will not agree to divest from israel. >> we demand divestment. we will not be moved unless by force! >> reporter: erin mclaughlin is

there. >> that 2:00 p.m. deadline has arrived. over that way is the encampment. everyone there is wearing neon vests, those are the faculty members. they say they are here to protect the students. >> reporter: as graduation nears, many universities making similar pleas to students as they continue to grapple over the debate between free speech and hate speech. at usc, the university hwill tae action if they don't leave voluntarily. meanwhile at ucla, school officials allowing it to grow. >> we're continuing to keep the pressure up until the demands are met. >> reporter: doug waxman is a professor of israel studies. he supports their right to protest but not their demands. >> i think it's likely not to happen or be effective. diplomatic pressure is

increasing on hamas to accept the cease-fire with israel. antony blinken described the current offer in stark terms. >> hamas has before it a proposal that is extraordinarily, extraordinarily generous on the part of israel. and, in this moment, the only thing standing between the people of gaza and a cease-fire is hamas. >> and a senior arab diplomat at the talks says this could be the last chance tofor a deal. let's go to claudio lavanga who is following developments for us. what is in that offer that blinken describes as generous? >> reporter: according to an israeli official and arab diplomat who are familiar with the talks and spoke to nbc news, as part of the deal, hamas is expected to release 33 hauostag, all women, children, elderly, and some require urgent medical attention in return for the release of palestinian

prisoners. in addition there were talks of 40, but hamas said some of those who meet that criteria died while in captivity. but the crucial, the most important part appears to be the cease-fire. because israel will agree to a six-week truce, which is a major concession on the part of israel, based on a u.s. proposal. but the problem here is that hamas has always demanded a permanent cease-fire. so that could be a turning point of the deal. the final decision relies, according to all sources, on yahya sinwar, who is believed to be hiding in the underground network of tunnels under gaza. >> we'll see how far this goes. claudio, thank you. donald trump will be back in court today as his hush money trial resumes. testimony is likely to continue with gary farrow, an executive for first republic bank. he took the stand saying he
