beach on terra that south of pacifica and north speech. thanks for joining us on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. the chp has reported that severe traffic alert. >> and an injury crash on northbound and southbound highway one just south of double slide earlier this afternoon is when that call came in. firefighters say the vehicle fell 200 feet down over the cliff. a chp helicopter lowered a rescuer on to the rocks where that vehicle had landed. but the person inside the car had died. right now. we're still working to learn what caused the car to go over the cliff in the first place. drivers are being asked to. >> using alternate route. traffic is expected to be impacted in both directions of highway one for some time. tonight. we're also learning the 4 people, including a baby who were killed in a fiery crash over the weekend were from livermore. that crash happened on highway one. 20 authorities have identified

the victims as bonita co our yaga. >> liliana to get mendoza. 12 year-old jorge get and 4 months old. david, you can in this video here. some people rushing over to try and help those victims in that fiery crash. chp says the driver of the minivan carrying 7 people, including the victims, lost control, hit an overpass overturned and caught fire. chp says 3 other children were rescued from the van. they were taken to the hospital with some major injuries. officers say they're between the ages of 6.15, no word on their conditions tonight. it is unclear at this point if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. today marks 118 years since that devastating

19. 0, 6, san francisco earthquake. >> more than 3,000 people were killed and more than 200,000 folks were left without their homes. since then, a lot of lessons certainly have been learned when it comes to being prepared for earthquake and kron four's rob nesbitt joins us live in the studio with more on how construction has changed since then, as we look at some of those old images, what a devastating day. and it was really not the earthquake, but the fires that were so a deadly in san francisco trying to get them out. the fire department has obviously been revamped 2 times 3 times over since then, rob. it's a reminder, though, of what can happen. that's right. grant before 19, 0, 6 building codes were lax because of profits, for instance, would was used more to save money. that does not happen today. >> but there's still concerns for safety. the skyline of san francisco has job the last 118 years.

february a man was held against his will assaulted multiple times at a house on million court. the victim was released more than a day later and then promptly checked himself into a hospital. officers say that's when they learned 3 people were responsible for this assault. when police arrested them. they say they found illegal gambling machines and marijuana for sale. police have not released a motive in this case. all 3 people are booked into jail for robbery, kidnapping and torture. the 3 accused killers of kevin nishita appearing before a judge today and shoot his wife, virginia, telling crowd for the plea hearing has been continued until may 25th at the request of the attorney for should mitchell mitchell along with aaron gilbert and hershel hale are accused of shooting and issued in november of 2021. on the cheetah was protecting a kron. 4 reporter in oakland, all 3

men face murder charges as well as charges of attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. >> tuesday night's walnut creek council meeting once again interrupted by antisemitic hate. according to council member kevin wilk, the man you see here on the podium drove from sacramento to make hateful comments against the jewish community. according to the jewish community relations council. this is the 3rd time this man is shown up to this public forum, as well. said, though, in his post today, the community was prepared to denounce any hate. you can see folks there holding large pride flags with religious symbols standing directly behind the man. city of san francisco is taking the city of oakland to court over the port of oakland's decision to change the name of oakland international airport. they want to call it the san francisco bay, oakland international airport as kron four's. dan kerman reports a ruling could revolve around whether the change clarifies or confused as travelers. the city and county of san francisco has filed a federal

lawsuit against the city of oakland. >> maintaining the decision by port of oakland commissioners to rename oakland international airport, san francisco bay, oakland international airport infringes on san francisco's trademark. the first date of use suppose trademark was 1954. we've had these trademarks for so long that they're incontestable under federal san francisco city attorney david chiu says the name change is an intent to safe in business from sfo. oakland's plan is designed to divert those who unfamiliar with geography. it also is leading travelers to think that oakland airport has some sort of a business relationship with tests which doesn't. so we're concerned about the economic harm. the sfo is going to suffer as a result as oakland is trying to unfairly profit from s oppose investment and its reputation and services related to the

brand had the trademark sfo cannot lay claim to that. you graphically descriptive term. san francisco let alone claiming exclusive rights to the bay. but the port of oakland maintains there's nothing wrong with adding san francisco to oakland airport's name. we want to clarify for travelers that oakland airport is inefficient and distinctive choice from flying into the san francisco bay area. >> but instead of clarifying san francisco maintains the new name will cause confusion. oakland's proposed name is going to create immense confusion and chaos for travelers, particularly those who do not speak english. we asked arriving passengers about the name change in all agreed. adding san francisco to oakland's name is confusing. it's more confusing. i think it's clear or that it stays oakland international. i think it's going to confuse a lot of people, too. >> prison from here to see kind of a necessary why we need a name change. oakland airport is a good enough to script where exactly it is its

tonight. good to see kyle. i don't know. i think people like, oh, yeah. i mean, it does feel the weather is going to be on their side anyway. if you do want to go, i will say that will be a little bit cooler this weekend. then we were the last. >> yesterday today, last 2 days. but other than that, a pretty nice weekend ahead. let's talk about what's happening outside right now. you do notice as we take a live look here at the golden gate bridge. little bit of a cloud cover moving in. we are going to have a little bit more marine layer presents tonight and things are going to change it up just a little bit. but let's talk about the temperatures and where we're at right now. you can see 54 degrees in san francisco. 62 in oakland, not that in livermore either. 76 degrees. so we got up there again today. conquered 78 santa rosa. 74 half moon bay about 54 degrees. so taking a look at the fog cast, you can just see here as we roll across. we're going to have some of that cloud cover with us. and even the potential for a little overnight drizzle tonight. so just be prepared for that out at the coast. and i think perhaps up in elevation in parts of the east bay. having said that, tomorrow is going to be a very nice day. you see it right there. we're going to be looking out for temperatures that are above average yet

>> welcome back. a neighborhood near redwood city was shut down this morning as police served a search warrant for an armed robbery suspect. happened on marlboro avenue in north fair oaks. police say the suspect identified as 36 year-old jeffrey tavern junior was staying at a home on that street officers found and were able to arrest a suspect. no one was hurt. the neighborhood has since reopened. meantime, oakland police department investigating a deadly shooting that happened just before 9.30, last night on 16th street. police say the sacramento police department was an oakland investigating a homicide. opd says the suspect came from inside a home with a gun and officers shot and killed them. they say no officers were injured. the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave as they investigate the

incident. california's attorney general rob bonta who you see right he visited a new affordable housing site in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood today. >> the complex is also a transit oriented, giving residents easy access to public transportation. botta says expanding housing sites like this one is a solution to combat what he calls a homelessness emergency up and down the state. >> we're focused on enforcing the laws in the housing space laws that require streamlining and expedited housing and by ng that require cities to plan to build their fair share. unfortunately, there are some cities that are not contributing to the solution. and so we work with them to remind them of the law encourage them to do their part and if necessary, we hold them accountable in court. >> once complete, the building will provide nearly 200 units to families with, but they call mixed income. meanwhile,

governor newsom has announced nearly 200 million dollars aimed at clearing encampments and helping california cities who are experiencing issues with homelessness as kron four's capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports now san mateo and marin counties as well as the city of oakland are up for that funding. >> it's about people's lives. people are dying on our watch. people are dying on the streets and we all have a responsibility to do passionate. governor gavin newsom speaking about the issue impacting communities across the state. homelessness happening on the streets has to be a top priority. and newsom says it is a priority for his administration during this virtual press conference leaders from up and down the state newsom announced his administration is allocating 192 million dollars in grant funding to 17 communities across california. all for programs to help clear encampments and get help to more than 3,500 people in the streets who so desperately need treatment and housing.

those set to receive the funding include the counties of los angeles in san mateo and the cities of fresno, oakland, san bernardino, an oceanside. i want to see results. everybody wants result, but some have expressed skepticism over the state's ability to properly track results. this california on a report from earlier this month concluded while the state invested 24 billion dollars to tackle homelessness over the last 5 years, the state did not track whether those investments worked or lead to positive outcomes. all that is the audit showed statewide homeless has increased by 50% between 2013 2023. i think our communities are frustrated. republican assemblymember josh hoover as one of the bipartisan lawmakers who requested the audit and was concerned by its findings. he now has a bill that would require state-run homelessness programs to report their costs and outcomes annually. something has to change in california. the approach that we're taking is not working and we're not going to fix it by throwing more money at the problem. still, newsom promises things will change on that front. he's announced an expansion of

the california housing accountability unit to include more oversight of state homelessness, grants to cities and counties. i'm not interested in funding for your people have to and feel the progress and the change. and if they're not, our counties are turning their back, aren't participating in funding. i'm not interested in continuing the status quo. as for this latest round of investments, those on this call say the money will make a difference. i can tell you we're poised to put this spending to work immediately services, including mental health shelter. >> outreach, permanent housing and lot more. and these are services i can tell you that are desperately desperately needed it's changing lives. >> and the community is receiving. the funding can start to use it right away. reporting at the state capitol eytan wallace kron. 4 news. >> well, getting away with ignoring a text from your boss is one step closer to becoming law. the assembly labor committee today passed a bill that require all state

employers to not contact their employees outside of work hours. the bill now heads to the assembly appropriations committee. it was introduced by san francisco assembly member matt haney. and it would give employees basically right to disconnect from emails calls, texts, you name it after work hours or before work hours. it does, however, make exceptions for emergencies. sir, needing to discuss scheduling certain companies like those with unusual hours are on call. employees may also be exempt. >> let's get you a check of the forecast. taking a live look outside at the transamerica pyramid. nice blue skies and sunshine can't complain. >> no, not quite as warm as yesterday, but still perfectly pleasant. meteorologist kyla grogan is here with the latest i hey there. yeah, i got my day freezing out to enjoy some of that sunshine today and those warm temperatures if you're out and about in san francisco, we've got some really nice temperatures here of let's take a look at what we saw today and just to show

you, these are the observed temperatures compared to normal are going to get the official from the national weather service here in just a few moments. but san francisco spots in san francisco up to 70 degrees. storied oakland, san jose got up to 83. when you consider that normal. this time of year is 70 degrees. it's 13 degrees above average. obviously. same story here. 70's livermore 80's in napa. and as you can see, santa rose about 79 degrees. so we're getting kind used to this folks. this is where we are right now. temperatures, as you can see, still pretty warm inland congress right now at 78 degrees. we cooled it down here in san francisco to 59 and some nice 60's around the bay. the wind is getting a little breezy out there. a bit of a northwest flow. >> got a little disturbance is going to roll through tonight. and that's going to bring a little bit of that wind, particularly to the coast as we get into tomorrow and saturday. but it's also going to cool us down just a little bit for our friday and tonight it's going to bring some increased clouds and a little bit of past patchy drizzle. that is possible. the overnight hours having said that temperatures tonight are really nice live look outside at storm tracker. 4 showing

you e en have a little touch of moisture just sitting right off shore indicating that we could see some of that coastal drizzle. but the bigger picture here also kind of shows you just this little tiny bit of a disturbance that's going to be rolling in. that's going to cool us down. so if you are going to be on your patio tomorrow and you're in walnut creek, still going to be a really nice day, expecting to get up into those low to mid 70's for you. lots of sunshine in the afternoon. even if we do have a few clouds as we head the week, the first part of the day into the afternoon as we head across the week, we're taking a livermore's example here. you can see some of these temperatures knocked down for a couple of days and they can do break back up as we head towards the weekend. and guys, it's all about the weekend that's when we're going to see those temperatures that are really going to start to the more a little bit like cooler than we are now. but still above average rates of still like a really excellent weekend on tap. and i think the best part of this is dry, right? we seen get outside and do all the fun stuff.

>> well, take a good look here at emerald high school in dublin, a 24 acre campus for the dublin unified school district with a multilevel campus set to welcome its first class of students in august, 374 million dollar project. it's paid for by money from bond measures and the facilities are pretty high-end. the student union is vast boasting a full-scale commercial kitchen, a library and a pretty spacious jim. >> dublin, high school have is a really great high school, but it is full. so when we break off were essentially going divide that school in half leaving a both schools around 2000. plus, students. >> the district has been desperate for a new high school campus for quite a while now from 2010 to 2020, its population grew by 92% by comparison. the next highest growth from a neighboring school district was just about

11%. the current emerald high freshman class is being house on the dublin high school campus. right now. they will transfer to the new campus next school year. san francisco mayor london breed has submitted her nominations for the city's police commission. she has nominated retired alameda county judge seed on clay to replace outgoing commissioner jim burn. the mayor also nominated longtime community leader deborah walker for reappointment to the commission. the seven-member commission board is in charge of setting policy for the police department and conducting disciplinary hearings when police conduct charges are filed. these nominations will now need to be approved by the board of supervisors. >> up next, the driver charged with killing a 4 year-old girl in san francisco will not serve any jail time. we'll discuss the punishment she is facing. plus, it is parkinson's awareness month. what the experts are saying the public should know about that or will he sees and lots of questions about the future
