>> causing a clash between the right to free speech and safety concerns. there are now $0.10. san francisco state protesters held a rally there this afternoon. we tried to speak to some of those protesters, but we were turned away. and then at stanford pro-palestine protest there were met with counter protesters who showed up saying that they also have a right to be on campus. live in great these people are taking advantages of the freedoms afforded by this country. white will simultaneously chanting death to america almost on a nightly basis. >> and so i think it's good for them to recognize that. maybe they should be thankful for the country that they're protesting. >> both sides protested peacefully and uc berkeley. here's a flyer that's being passed around. currently students are camping on the campus, but on wednesday, some faculty and staff plan to be joining the students in solidarity. and then students at sonoma state university. they're also holding an encampment on campus. they're

demanding the school divest from all donors and funds that support and profit from the occupation in palestine they also want to see study-abroad programs connected with the israel shut down and the university to recognize palestinian identity in their curriculum across the country. some protests are escalating at columbia university in new york. a spokesperson for the university says it is beginning to suspend student protesters who are refusing to leave encampments protesters at the university of texas at austin are being met by law enforcement. we're totally 6 people were arrested there today at ucla. the camera there continues to grow. the university has made no attempts remove it, but they are stepping up security. meantime, the usc campus remains closed to the general public with students and faculty entering only through to designated areas. there is a lot of emotion from students as they try to make their viewpoints heard and talk about the israel-hamas war and

is our hannah brandt reports tonight. lawmakers are split on how it should be handled. >> scenes like this are playing out all over american college campuses with students clashing over the israel-hamas war. it's a great american value to to protest, but i don't believe living in a pup tent >> us is really helpful on the hill sunday. senator john fetterman raised concerns about the protests and on nbc's meet the press. senator mitch mcconnell called the situation dangerous. there's also anti-semitism. >> just completely unacceptable. many students are demanding their universities cut ties with israel and senator bernie sanders told cnn the raising legitimate concerns about the death toll palestinians and the humanitarian crisis in gaza. when you make those charges, that is not semitic. >> that is a reality on fox news. senator chris murphy said he supports students demonstrating peacefully. 95%

of the young people who are on these campuses are there because they believe there's a fundamental injustice being perpetrated. senator jd vance as well. students do have a right to protest. they do not have the right to set up tent cities on our public spaces in turn our cities in the garbage dumps, that that is what i think we should not allow some college campuses have use law enforcement to break up the protests and hundreds have been arrested. but senator tim kaine warned against escalating the response. the national guard going to college campuses, kent state and elsewhere did not end well. >> and i think that would be a very, very bad idea. some of the protests threaten to disrupt the upcoming graduation ceremonies scheduled at many of the college campuses with at least one already canceled in washington. i'm hannah brandt. >> for the very latest information on the israel-hamas war and the college protest. you can head to our web site kron 4 dot com. >> back in the bay area. police in oakland are looking for the shooters after 2 people were sent to the

hospital. the first shooting happened last night just before 11 o'clock on a 100th avenue near breed avenue. the second shooting. it happened just after 12, 30 monday morning on 73rd avenue near holly street. investigators say the victim in both of shootings were taken to the nearby hospital. anybody with information about either shooting is being asked to contact police. man has been found guilty of kidnapping, a kidnapping that happened back in 2008 and a 2015 attack. >> investigators say both crimes happened in berkeley. they say in 2008 keys, canard asbury approached a teenager near berkeley high school, kidnapped and sexually assaulted her. and in 2015, he's accused of walking into the home of a victim in attacking her. but the victim fought back asbury ended up running out the front door of that home. investigators say justice was delayed in the 2008 case because the rape kit was not tested into 2014, 6 years after the crime that

resulted in asbury being allowed to roam free. apparently searching for more victims which resulted in the attack in 2015. now many county jury found asbury guilty of both crimes is set to be sentenced in late may. >> child is in critical condition tonight after they and 3 other children were hit by a car while they were on a sidewalk. it happened saturday evening on foothill and stevens creek boulevard in cupertino. investigators say a driver of a pickup truck they suspect was under the influence, crashed his truck into another car and then a power pole also hitting the children that were on the sidewalk. all 4 children were taken to the hospital, their ages 4, 7, 8.11 investigators did not say which of the 4 is in critical condition. the driver of the pickup was arrested. flowers now remain at the site where a family of 4 was killed in a crash in pleasanton last week. today

police were back at the scene trying to figure out what happened. they say the family was apparently returning from a birthday party when for some reason, the electric car swerved and collided with the tree catching fire. >> right down the street from and their family, you know, like all rest of this and they have them. you know, he's seen him with their kids playing and he writes, when i right my by that. yeah, it's really sad. >> some of the names and ages of the victims are now being released. 41 year-old to run george 13 year-old rowan georgia, 9 year-old aaron george, the identity of the 4th victim not being released, but sources tell kron 4 news that it was the wife. >> police are asking for your help to try to find a suspect in a deadly hit and run in san francisco's ingleside district. some faint images here are from february in the area of allegheny boulevard and risso street. they show a

driver hitting a man crossing the street. the pedestrian died from his injuries officers are looking for dark colored toyota camry, possibly 1997 to 2001 model. they believe the car should have front end damage, damage, headlights anddmissing toyota emblem from its hood. anyone who has information related to the incident is asked to call san francisco police. the city of san francisco will slow down plans now for traffic safety project in the city's west portal neighborhood. this as a group of business owners and neighbors spoke out against the plans that included a number of changes to west portal avenue and lenox way and clermont boulevard in response to the concerns the city is agreeing to a more thoughtful planning process that will include input from a soon to be formed, welcoming west portal committee, san francisco transit officials are reminding everyone that they are enforcing parking violations this week. it's an effort to try to make both sidewalks and streets safer for everyone. officials say

typically people packed and full of whatever the contents were unaware of what those contents are, but they're usually packed fully so you have a heavy fire load so that that always what is going to create different fire conditions for us. >> took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control. nobody was hurt and the cause is under investigation. a warehouse caught fire in oakland tonight. this is near west grand and maoket. crews say 40 firefighters responded and put it out in less than an hour. no injuries reported here and it's not clear what started that fire. >> new temporary housing is coming to san jose santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez unveiling the project at the salvation army emanuel house today. the campus will be getting a complete makeover into more than 100 temporary houses. mayor matt mahan also there and talked about the importance of public private investments. >> it's going to take all of us coming together all of the

above approach from from the shelter to individual sleeping pods to more permanent long-term housing placements. we are using streamlining to our planning department thanks to state legislation to move these projects forward with less red tape to do it faster to do it. more cost effectively. >> the county of santa clara will invest 4 million dollars into that project. >> city of laos started building a navigation center designed tackle homelessness in that area. the city held a groundbreaking event today. the center will serve as a central hub for homeless people providing them with vital services and shelter. it will offer 125 beds, job training programs and more anticipation for the center's high. >> so the community is very excited. i'm iran has community is really looking forward to this as we're going out and doing outreach to they're asking when is an opening, can we get? and we've had people reach out already hoping to get on wait lists and they're they're ready for it to be here. >> the navigation center is

narcan disagree, referencing years of research and statistics. it's about giving people education information and access to resources that literally keep them alive. >> that's what harm reduction is about. governor newsom's office says the orders have been made for the cheaper narc can and should be arriving as early as next month. >> reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> at least 5 people are dead after more than 120 tornadoes plowed through 6 states in the midwest and the south in just 2 days for those deaths are oklahoma and includes an infant, dozens of homes and businesses are now just piles of debris and tens of thousands of people still don't have power. first, chief meteorologist lawrence karnow here with more on these deadly storms just scary. seeing the storms rolling out across the plains and boy just intensifying as they head out and >> again, i think we're going to see some more severe weather possibly again tomorrow. we're not done with the storm system that came

through. there's another already developing out there. so here we go. you can see the storm just what making its way across the plains. all that cold air dumping out across the colorado rockies, then enter the plane's pick up the moisture on the south and there you get that line of thunderstorms forming and before you know it all the tornadi activity and they've have that issue and they're going to see it again. i think as we head in toward the next couple of days, as we've got a series of storms developing out there behind that. you see all these. these are all storm reports on the circles here very excessive winds to tornadoes on the ground. funnel clouds and even extremely large hail. some of that hail about 2 inches large. that's damaging hail rolling across the plains. now the storm system kind of winding down a little bit tonight, but numerous areas. yeah, they've just started in palm and you can see hundreds of reports of all the damage caused by this storm system making its way across the country's midsection. and yet tornadoes you all along that path and area. there you go. we've had reports there of damage to buildings and trees. boy, what a mess there all across the central plains. and

there's more to come. the storm system help tomorrow forecast to move a little further to the east. not going to move much. that means along this line. you can see the areas shaded in green here. this in the areas with the potential for some severe weather behind that. we've got some more cold air coming out of the rockies. and so here we go again. all this is going to dump into the central plains with the possibility of more severe weather on the way see it right here in the models one front moves out of the way. and then you get that next with developing in the afternoon. then another very strong line of storms developing across the country's midsection. again, you can see he's got the potential to be some really severe storms rolling on by and bring bring with the potential for more damaging storms as well. so temperatures really is that big contrast in temperatures at this time of year. that really gives rise to the storm system. got all that warm moisture coming south. very cold air coming right across the rockies when they combined. that's where we see the severe weather likely to see more in the coming days. all right, lawrence, the 2 men are behind bars tonight after allegedly stealing a safe from

a brentwood business. >> police say that officers responded to an alarm going off inside the business. the 2 suspects sped off in a car leading to a brief manhunt. police eventually found them hiding in bushes nearby officers found tools and the stolen safe inside their car. police say that the men face several charges, including burglary and conspiracy to commit a crime in pittsburgh, police arrested several suspects in connection to a recent string of catalytic converter thefts during their investigation. they found items that could reveal where stolen converters were being sold. police believe that this could unravel a network behind the staffs. officers didn't say how many suspects were there, 60 people arrested roughly half a pound of drugs seized during a one-day enforcement operation in san francisco's tenderloin. >> that's according to san francisco police who say of the 60 people arrested 5 were suspected of selling drugs

last wednesday. others arrested included those for possession of drugs, arrest warrant and stay away. orders. 2 loaded firearms were also confiscating confiscated, according to officials since may of last year. they made more than 3,000 arrests and seized almost 500 pounds of drugs in the tenderloin and south of market areas. recent count of unhoused individuals in napa county show significant progress is being made in addressing homelessness. according to the preliminary data from the county, there's been an 18% decrease in the overall count of individuals experiencing homelessness between january 2023. and january of 2024, this is below pre-pandemic levels. the number of individual sleeping in shelters has increased by 34% the number of individual sleeping outside a shelter declined by 42%. meantime, the number of individuals experiencing first time host homelessness has seen a quote

concerning increase the antioch library is closing for 6 weeks starting tomorrow to have its roof repaired. >> as of now, the library scheduled to reopen on june. 11th officials say that the book drop will be locked and items placed on hold will not be available for pickup during that closure. peace plaza renovations now underway in san francisco's japantown city leaders met for a groundbreaking ceremony over the weekend assembly member. phil ting says that this is a step forward after forcing japanese americans out of this neighborhood in the past. coming up, a sword collected from a man who police say stole from a restaurant. >> what police say he took off. listen, it wasn't cash or food. plus, kaiser suffers a data breach which patients the company says are at risk of having their personal information and what these companies say they won't the selling in california after officials say the items are only being used. why criminals?

>> man is in jail tonight after police say he threatened the santa rosa restaurant employee with a sword while trying to steal a drink. take a look. police say this is the start of the man had when they founded this morning. the employee telling officers that the man threatened him yesterday in a restaurant near old courthouse square. police

eventually found the suspect and arrested him. >> man who was out and parole on parole is back in custody after attacking being accused of tech attack in 2 people, including a police chief. police say the attacks happened in piedmont friday afternoon after reports said an elderly man was being attacked at grand lake ace hardware. >> we had an elderly customer kind of walk through the door, appeared to kind of stop and clean as glasses. and a gentleman walked from outside right behind them. sucker punched him right into the back of his head and knocked him out for quite a few minutes. >> manager says the suspect then ran back outside into the building next door where he was met with police. but the officers were not able to stop him. there. they say he ran away and broke into a home where he threatened a resident before running off again. but this time you stop by the piedmont police chief. >> pop right out where i was at and so that when eggs in my vehicle identified giving

at 10, 30, just how many officers are needed to >> big city mayor san jose police officers association says one is not enough. this comes after the one officers assigned to protect san jose mayor matt mahan ended up getting hurt in a scuffle. those kiahnna kron 4 camera. dan kerman reports on the demands from the san jose police union. >> doing an interview. it was last tuesday during a kron 4 interview with san jose mayor matt mahan. when an altercation erupted between this man. 35 year-old wesley pollard and the plainclothes san jose police officer providing security for the mayor. pollard was ultimately arrested and charged with felony resisting an officer by means of violence and misdemeanor battery and disturbing the peace. the incident went on for nearly 4 minutes before a community

member help subdue pollard. now in this letter, the san jose police officers association, he's calling on san jose's acting police chief and city manager to double the mayor's security detail. >> having only one officer's part of a security detail for ranking member of the city. was not sufficient was unsafe. >> steve sisolak is president of the san jose police officers association. >> by doubling it increasing another we feel nurse eyes. another readily available. definitely make everything safer. going forward. >> in a statement, the san jose police department says it's reviewing the current procedures for the mayor's security detail. if they decide to bump up the number, it would not be unusual for a large city while san francisco police won't say how many officers are on mayor breed security detail. oakland police confirm the department generally provides to sworn officers for the security and protection of mayor thao. dan

kerman kron. 4 news. >> new at 10 tonight, amazon e-bay at sea and wal-mart have all banned or restricted the sales of illegal license plate covers on their websites. this after san francisco city attorney david chiu sent a letter to the company's to try to stop the sale of the covers here in california. already illegal to sell and use those covers attorney to says his office will continue to monitor the online sales of these license plate covers. he adds that the only reason someone to put a cover like that on their license plate is to try to get away with a crime. some customers who bought ring security cameras will be eligible to get refunds. thanks to a privacy settlement. officials say the federal trade commission will be sending more than 5.6 million dollars in refunds to about 117,000 buyers of amazon's ring systems. this after the ftc accused ring of allowing employees and contractors to access customer videos. personal data of

right now. looks like the next couple days. pretty nice around the bay area. maybe a little windy in spots will show you more. but can you believe the models are trying to paint some rain as we get ready for next week? and we'll take a closer look at that. just a second. but out the door right now, skies are mostly clear. the winds still blowing around a little bit outside. but overall, not bad. we've got mostly clear skies around the bay area right now. long range forecast models from the cpc. looks like we're going to see and increased risk of some rain as we get toward next weekend. when you know that we start talking cinco de mayo. and here we go. we've got a chance of rain in the forecast. could be above normal precipitation. if it holds true will show you the models. now, here's the american model. you've got high pressure off the week low to the north here. now, the next couple days will tomorrow looks good. lots of sunshine coming our way in the following day. still looking good. it's after that where these models start to really go different directions american model pretty bullish on. bring us some rain here. see it right now as we head toward the weekend clouds start to roll in on friday and by saturday, there you go. a significant storm possibly rolling into the bay area and

more snow in the high country. more showers possibly continuing into sunday as well. now rainfall totals. this is hard for me to believe forecasting an inch and a half. almost 2 inches of rain across parts of the bay area. that would be incredible for this time of year if that were to happen. now, european model looks the other way. that's pthe forecast over the same time period. yeah. how about that? what a difference in the forecast models. this one saying maybe just maybe a drop in the bucket and that is about it. but we've got a few days to sort it all out before we get the weekend. i know it's an important weekend cinco de mayo what we're trying to the forecast right for you. but out the door tonight, we're looking at mostly dry conditions right now. mostly clear a bit breezy as we head throughout the night tonight. and then tomorrow, some gusty winds, especially in solano county. a high wind advisory has been issued by the national weather service. 11 o'clock on tuesday until 05:00pm on wednesday. some of those wind gusts as high as 35 to 45 miles per hour of the door. tomorrow should be a nice day. a cool start. them are going to see that breeze picking up again in the afternoon 50's 60's

near the coastline. get inside the bay. lots of sunshine and warmer temperatures to numbers warming up in the upper 60's into redwood city. then you're breaking out the 70's across much of the santa clara valley, east bay. also look at war, mid 70's by tomorrow afternoon. should be a really nice day, although that wind kicking up and county, blustery in spots. watch out for that special for traveling toward the sacramento valley. back to the coastline. cooler but least cloud-free temperatures. the next couple days could see some 80's as we get to wednesday and thursday. cooling slightly on friday and this weekend we've got some work to do. you know, i don't like when these models completely diverge from one to the other teacher. i have a question. yes or so, which one is more accurate? the european model or the american model worked? well, a lot of people like to say the european but really matters. it all depends what kind of situation. and so there's no definitive answer. you know, you the model could be correct. read the model could be completely wrong. and that's why i still have a job because i'm supposed decide. and that's a very scholarly question. i thought you were going to ask what's happening

just found out they were cancer free about a month ago. and so that was like the month's anniversary. and they had just gone to hawaii, you know, for their make-a-wish. so it fantastic. there's 350 wishes that are granted here in the bay area. so nearly every year, some nearly a wish a day. and it's just i mean, it was beautiful. so we're all familiar with bat kid. yeah, you're right. course that like the big story, everyone remembers. but yeah, i mean, just from that, you can see that was like 6 or 7 different types of that the people have from very tiny small, you know, wishes they wanna, you know, become a chef or a day or come a construction worker to, you know, i like the kid who has that combine hawaii and yeah, exactly. yeah. the he had the right idea. i some might taking at his idea after that for sure. thank you for that and need that. yeah. >> mlb plans to address its uniform issues following complaints from players and fans over.
