4:16 am
that's the feeling among dozens of athletics fans that gathered at sutter health park on saturday to voice their disapproval of the team's plan to move from oakland to las vegas. it's really sad what's happening. i grew up going to games, hoped to take my kids to the games in oakland, and they're just getting ripped away from us. early april, the a's owner, john fisher, announced the team will temporarily play at sutter health park in west sacramento for three seasons, starting next year. it's not necessarily that i don't want them in the city, it's that they belong in oakland. that's where they've been for, you know, over 60 years. the last dive bar in oakland, 68, organized the protest before the river cats game against the las vegas aviators. fans showed up wearing a's gears and shirts and signs with the word sell. we want john fisher to sell this team. he off a passionate fan base, you know, and it wasn't right. although these fans are mad about losing their team, they say the biggest impact will be for the younger generations. it would be
4:17 am
terrible, especially sort of in a generational sense, like there's generations of kids that won't get to make those memories at the ballpark with their family. for them, the hope still is to keep the a's in oakland. they don't belong in vegas, and they certainly don't belong here. they belong in oakland. and that was caroline estrada reporting for ktvu. well, the a's begin a ten game homestand at the coliseum today. they'll take on the pittsburgh pirates after winning a series against one of the better teams in baseball. the baltimore orioles. the a's came from behind, scoring two runs in the ninth inning to win 7 to 6. the giants go up against the green monster tomorrow night when they face the boston red sox and the famous 37 foot high left field wall at fenway park. the giants are in second place in the national league west. they beat the pittsburgh pirates 3 to 2 to win that series. giants brought fans off their seats with back to back home runs in the third inning. i think we're trending in the right direction, offense is coming along. pitching is

great, but i think it's i think it's getting better. i'm happy just got to find the bats and they're coming around. we're starting to get some hits together. offense will get moving. i think once we get the offense fully firing, we're going to be off and running. the giants got off to a rough start this season but have not lost a series in the past two weeks. the official start of football season still months away now, but it was a busy weekend for the 49ers organization as the defending nfc champions wrapped up the 2024 draft. in the first round, the niners took wide receiver ricky pearsall out of florida. in the second and third rounds, the team moved up to take florida state cornerback renardo green and kansas city offensive lineman dominick puni. some niners fans say these picks will help fill some of the team's holes. we filled the needs. i think of everywhere we needed, i love the ricky pearsall pick at one. i mean, what's so bad about giving brock some more weapons, right? i don't care when we got him, i love it. yeah, i was pretty
4:19 am
happy with it because we we've been dealing with receiver issues previous year too. so it's good to have an extra backup, a slot receiver. so it'll be solid solid pickup i believe the 40 niners signed a number of undrafted free agents following the draft, including tyreek owens, the son of former 40 niner terrell owens. the big question now is what happens to the niners two best receivers. we're talking of course about deebo samuel and brandon aiyuk. rumors have been swirling for months about their futures. the niners have said they are not going to trade either player after one of the most decorated kickers in stanford university history is now in the nfl. what's up rams fans? josh carter here. kicker from stanford. so excited to be a ram and cannot wait to get ready to work. all right. this weekend the rams selected stanford kicker joshua carty in the sixth round with the 209th overall pick in this year's draft. carty holds the school record for career field goal percentage at 85. he is also the first cardinal kicker

two i'm pam cook i'm andre senior in for dave clark. today is monday april 29th. and i can tell you in the east bay was pool day pool day. lots of people were at the pool, i bet. yeah it was a warm one in the east bay. steve paulson here. now with more on. well, it's a little nicer in the water than it is for, that's for sure. but it looks nice inland today. a little cool. the breeze is still there. 40s, 50s. a little chill in the morning in palo alto is down to 47, again, a little cool there, but everything looks good. only a few patches of fog. so we're all set for sunshine today. but you can call me the breeze because it's not going away. systems in the north of us keep that breeze going. but still, lots of sunshine. we'll bump temps up a teeny bit, but pretty close to where they should be this time of year. all right, sal's here. i think it's still quiet. unless something new happened. are you awake? are you checking twitter? ex, what are you doing? yeah. you know what? things were shut off, and i was just trying to log into half the stuff that i'm, logging, you know? you know how it is, steve. just a monday morning. some things are not the

4:31 am
put the community on edge, carol daniels described how her home was burglarized with her granddaughter in the house. at first, she thought the cat had knocked something over, then she heard men's voices and saw lights flashing in the hallway. she yelled. they ran! the santa clara county sheriff's department spoke at the meeting, saying they believe south american theft groups and others are responsible for surveilling and burglarizing homes. as this has become a very, very sophisticated and organized group of individuals committing these crimes, they definitely know when you're out of town or when they think you should be out of town. there's some good news, though. although it's just a three month snapshot thus far in los altos hills, our residential burglary numbers are down 43% in 2022 as compared to the same time period last year. the sheriff's department says it's using license plate readers, adding more patrols and
4:32 am
using technology to identify suspects. still, some residents said they felt they had to take matters into their own hands late last year to keep themselves safe. these people, strangers in this area, gave me 990 bucks and we signed up woodside patrol and so woodside, woodside patrol patrols our streets full time. the santa clara county sheriff's department says they've arrested about 12 people over the last five years and have warrants out for five others. they also asked residents to use alarm systems, including on doors. on the second floor, motion lights, and use surveillance cameras in all areas if possible. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. at 432 is your time this morning. a suspect remains in custody this morning accused of attacking piedmont's police chief. the bizarre incident unfolded friday afternoon at the ace hardware store on grand avenue. police say 42 year-old willie gomer randomly struck a customer
4:33 am
inside the store, then ran to a nearby home when the taser failed to stop him. investigators say gomer then attacked police chief jeremy bowers, who had joined other officers outside that home. the chief suffered minor injuries and is frustrated that the situation even happened. why this person was even out. he was on parole for kidnaping, robbery and numerous other charges and so clearly he was not in a state where he should be out and about in the public, given his his his level of criminal violent activity. police say the customer attacked inside that store was rushed to a hospital, but they have not yet revealed that person's current condition. amanda is now facing charges after running away with a teenager. san francisco police announced. 16 year old mint butterfield has been found safe in san francisco. police say the teen ran away from their home in bolinas april 21st, with 26 year old christopher duvall. they were found eventually in san francisco. does follow was
4:34 am
arrested for multiple criminal violations and was booked in the marin county jail. butterfield was returned to their family. firefighters in san francisco responded to three separate car fires in the tenderloin over the weekend. video of the fire was posted on the citizen app here. the fire first or the first one reported around 515 saturday on ellis street, followed by a second fire about four minutes later on eddie street, and the third fire reported 24 minutes after that on jones street. police say no one was inside the vehicles, no injuries reported and no arrests made. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken returns to the middle east today and plans to stop in israel during his trip now. israel still plans to invade rafah, despite global concerns for the more than 1 million palestinians sheltering there. the white house says president biden made it clear that the us does not support an invasion. in a phone call this weekend with israeli prime

minister benjamin netanyahu. the us is also putting more pressure on israel to follow more to allow more aid into gaza. officials from the group world central kitchen says they are preparing to resume operations in gaza less than a month after an israeli airstrike killed seven of its workers. staff say they have about 8 million meals ready to enter gaza. the organization is also building a new field kitchen. it says the kitchen will be named after one of the workers killed in the strike, damian. 435 now this morning, increased police patrols continue on the ucla campus following a weekend of tense and sometimes violent protests. he was about to go. several fights breaking out on campus yesterday between pro-palestinian demonstrators and pro-israel counter-protesters. the violence came amid a campus demonstration that involved thousands of protesters, many of them ucla students. while at the usc campus, police in riot gear returned to that campus this weekend after pro-palestinian
4:36 am
demonstrators returned with tents. they reestablished their encampment just days after police arrested 93 demonstrators last week. usc canceled its main commencement ceremony, citing safety concerns. the campus of cal poly humboldt is now closed for the rest of the semester due to protests. administrators announced over the weekend that all of the students will be working remotely during the final three weeks of the semester. they say anyone on campus without authorization is subject to citation or arrest by university police. the decision to close the campus comes in response to the pro-palestinian protesters, who currently occupy two university buildings. students at columbia university, meantime, are expressing their opinions regarding the ongoing antiwar encampments situated on the school's main lawn. it's been nearly two weeks since pro-palestinian students pitched tents to protest israel's actions in the war with hamas and demand their school cut financial ties with companies that support israel. after reaching a dead end with administrators, student leaders say they plan to continue protesting while students not
4:37 am
involved with the encampments are now reflecting on the situation. i do believe that the situation here is quite frustrating, it seems. first, i believe students have their right to protest and what's frustrating the most is how the president deal with such situation. i think it's quite wrong to call the nypd to come here to, you know, to detain the student, i think it's just incredibly sad and disruptive. i think both sides have, you know, extremely valid points. and it's really unfair to every single person on this campus. what's happening? the university sent an email to students last week saying, bringing back police at this time to remove the encampment would be counterproductive. now to the wild weather moving through parts of the country. now, cleanup and recovery efforts are underway from intense tornadoes that tore through the midwest, dozens of destructive twisters swept through states like nebraska, kansas and oklahoma this weekend. the strong winds damaging hundreds of buildings. and in oklahoma, at least four
4:38 am
people were killed and many more left injured. everything else can be rebuilt. but but we can't. we can't restore life. you come upstairs, and see that you have no house from emerging from the basement. you know, your home, but you're actually homeless. and as that cleanup gets underway, the national service, national weather service is warning that flash flooding does remain a threat in parts of the region. wow. hum. okay, that leads us to steve paulson with our weather forecast a lot quieter here. thank goodness. that's for sure. yes. but what we'll start with the boy temps because they're really cold. so 51 point arena point raised boys 52 san francisco boy is 50. and even down to monterey. one of the boys is 51. bodega bay boy not working is unless i'm missing something. it's just criminal that is just so important. and

it hasn't worked for over a year . and i don't know whose cage to rattle or what, but you got to get that fixed, we do have in between systems here, the big, strong, low. look at that right there in the middle of the country. that's what triggered the severe weather. we're caught in between that low and the high, which is pretty far to the west. there in the pacific, mainly clear a little bit of a northerly breeze, maybe for some here, but 50 on the temps, a lot of 40s though. petaluma's 47 napa 47 degrees. menlo park's down to 4748 woodside. there's menlo park, stanford campus down to 45. that's cool. even half moon bay and pacifica at 49. so there is a little chill to the morning air, almost 40 miles an hour northwest at middle peak, north side of mount tamalpais, even out to pittsburgh, west at 20, oakland berkeley hills, mainly a west northwest breeze, so 20s up in the mountains. mount shasta is 39, though truckee and south lake tahoe 28 and 29. mammoth down to 26. all quiet here. not a lot going on

days. the jfk promenade in san francisco's golden gate park is celebrating four years of serving as a car free space for people to walk, bike and skate. this weekend, hundreds of people turned out to mark the anniversary. mayor london breed officially closed the 1.5 mile stretch of jfk drive at the start of the pandemic. in 2020, the board of supervisors first passed legislation to make it permanent in 2022. this past november, voters passed measure j, which reaffirmed that legislation. we've realized how amazing the space is without cars. if you just look behind me, i mean, you have kids learning how to ride a bike, you have runners, you have adults learning how to ride a bike, art in the middle of the street. it is just sparks joy. since closing to cars, the city says the promenade has seen more than 12 million visits, making it san francisco's most frequented open space. and speaking of the promenade, you can ride through golden gate park on roller skates, even if you do not own your own pair. the park's

beloved skate in place is now offering rentals every weekend, sf rec and parks partnered with church of eight wheels to make the rentals available now. skating place is located, of course, on the jfk promenade near sixth avenue. the godfather of skate shows off his skills most weekend nights at the skate park. david miles junior says this is the first time rentals have been made available in golden gate park since the early 80s. there are not many places where you can just show up, be a part of something and feel it. you know, in your bones and your nerves. and here in golden gate park, when you sit along the hillside and watch the skaters skating, you feel like you're a part of it, and we even bring you into it so that you can dance and that you can feel it. you can. you don't necessarily have to skate, but the energy is so exciting and so unique. he is right about that. the energy is really cool. you just have to stop and watch even if you're not skating. our rental rates for kids under 12 are $12 per hour. adult rentals are $20 for

reason they're 51 is because they have a breeze. spring lake near santa rosa is about 44 clear. looks good. nice visibility, good air quality. but you can call me the breeze, that's for sure, because there's no doubt we have. we've gone from windy to blustery to breezy and i don't think that's changing anytime soon. so 60 to 70 is pretty close to where we should be this time of year. well, i know a little, but this man knows a lot about the traffic. mr. sal castaneda well, steve, and you know, i'm a simple man. i don't ask for much, but i don't like wind that much. most people don't. right so that's the only thing. but, you know, here we are. all right . the triple a traffic camera is showing us the bay bridge toll plaza. it's not completely filled in, but you might want to get out there sooner rather than later, because it is getting slower by the moment. no problems as you drive onto the bridge and you can see traffic is going to be okay in san francisco via our map system. you can see that there and

6:03 am
with the latest developments at stanford university. james yeah, it was thursday evening when students organized this similar protest that you've seen at pretty much all of these campuses across the country. tents have been set up. they've been here for days. and they people here say that they have are now announcing the school's student body is with them. here's a look at what these demonstrations have looked like on stanford's campus. these last couple of days. one of the groups represented here, students for justice in palestine. they say the school's student body voted overwhelmingly in favor of a ballot initiative, calling for israeli divestment. and just like what we've seen at other campuses, these protesters say schools have investments in companies like lockheed martin, chevron or hewlett packard, which they accuse are contributing to israeli attacks in gaza. we heard from one man who approached the protest over the weekend. he says he hopes it all continues to stay peaceful. when i look at these kids, i fear for i fear for their safety
6:04 am
and i hope that they will be allowed to exercise their first amendment without the risk of being a kind of retaliated against, or being arrested, or being harassed or being harmed. and we've yet to hear directly from stanford university on these protests, but we know school administration told these students they're violating its protest policies because overnight encampments are not allowed. we know the school asked for these tents to be gone by friday night, or else people here would face consequences, possibly in the form of issues with the office of student conduct or even arrests. we have seen law enforcement presence here over the last few days. not seeing much of that this morning, but no reports of any arrests at this time. it's also not clear how much of an influence the student body vote may have on the university's board of trustees, who would ultimately make any of those decisions in terms of divestment. but the protesters here say getting that kind of support from the student

6:19 am
sunny, nice little smidge warmer, but 6070 is about where we should be. little change for tuesday, may 1st of may and going into the second some, i think we could sneak in an 80 or so for inland areas. then it all comes down to a lot of cloud cover and cooler temps by the weekend. all right. thank you steve. members of san francisco's glide memorial church gathered for sunday services for the first time since the death of their longtime leader. go door to door. and people flocked. it was certainly a celebration of life. to honor the legacy of reverend cecil williams, the sunday service was held at the church in the tenderloin district. reverend williams founded more than 60 years ago. i sat down in the office where cecil was and cecil wasn't. in the room, and i sat down across from his desk where a sign said minister of liberation. he walked in and changed my life. another glide church member says he will

los altos with the information that they shared in a community meeting about these burglaries, ali. yeah. some of the recommendations that law enforcement officers suggested are things like making sure your second story windows and doors are secured, adding motion detector lights to your property, and even surveillance cameras. it was all part of a discussion that santa clara county sheriff's officers had with some residents in los altos. at a community meeting held last night, they were discussed. residents say they feel a sense of unease after hearing about their neighbors homes getting broken into or experiencing that type of crime themselves. i was turned on the tv very loud and the lights on inside and outside the house. when we left, none of that mattered. this has become a very, very sophisticated, organized group of individuals committing these crimes. they definitely know when you're out of town or when they think you should be out of town. santa

have outlived their use. the band purchased new uniforms recently, but they still have to pay off that bill. the challenge when i came to elsie and i saw the uniforms, i was like, whoa, these are old. we didn't use these uniforms because we just couldn't use them anymore. they were, you know, they were beyond what we could presentably, you know, fashionably put the students in there and make them feel good about themselves. an online fundraising page shows the band is about halfway to its goal. the band teacher says students have been fundraising nonstop. the kids that did a remarkable job, they they some of them went almost literally. i wouldn't say door to door, but like, they were like hitting up people like, you know, at the supermarket, like, hey, would you like to donate towards our fundraiser? cause, you know, here's our link. our you know, the qr code. they did an amazing job. boy, if you are a parent or you've been in an organization, you can relate to all that fundraising i know i can will. this friday, the band will raise money at its spring concert.
