9:00 am
jazz appreciation month, and to celebrate, the hercules public library is hosting a free concert this week. the event is happening tomorrow at the branch there on civic drive and hercules best of all, music will be performed by local students with the hercules high school jazz band. the event is free to the public and a marvelous way to perhaps introduce your little ones to the magic of jazz music. the most effective way to address the humanitarian crisis in gaza is to get a cease fire. the united states is increasing pressure on israel and hamas. this morning to reach an agreement. as protests continue to grow on college campuses across the country. what demonstrators say they want from bay area campuses. california is taking a big step in an effort to fight opioid overdoses. what the state is doing to try to make a key life saving drug much cheaper. and why proponents say
9:01 am
it could save lives as the weather continues to get warmer. that means fire season is marching closer. the meeting happening today to figure out how new technology can make us safer by using drones to fight wildfires. live from jack london square. this is morning time two. the night. good morning. today is monday, april 29th. we're looking at the san francisco skyline taken from our camera here in oakland. looking back across the bay, the wind is made for sure that a lot of those clouds have been blown away. a lot of us don't really like the wind. we'll talk to steve about that and he's going to say, too bad anyway. there's a growing push for san francisco to become the new home of the sundance film festival, at the sf film festival this weekend, the sf film commission tells ktvu it has officially expressed interest in bringing the fan festival to the bay area.
9:02 am
sundance organizers are currently debating a move away from utah. it's been there since 1981, though the move would not happen until the year 2027. we want some viewer reaction this morning we're asking, would you go to the sundance film festival if it came to san francisco? your options? yes, i'm excited about the prospect. the other one is i wouldn't go, but it would be cool for the city or no, keep it away from the bay area. just scan that qr code you see there at the right of your screen, there at the top, or go to ktvu.com to vote. i can say it would be kind of cool to have it here. i think it'd be cool. you know, there's a movie star in town today in oakland. mario van peebles is going. he has a new movie at the grand lake theater in the oakland theater, and he's going to be in town. i really wanted him to come in here and see you guys too. but nice. he's in town. we imagine he's busy. he'll be a little busy just a little bit. but yeah, just fun to have, you know, a little bit of, you know, hollywood and lights and glamor. and my thing is, you know, i, i
9:03 am
trust me, i want only good things for san francisco. i think sundance is so attached to park city, utah. you know, it's almost like, you know, biting into an m&m. and there's something other than chocolate. and i know they make weird varieties, but so maybe if san francisco could generate its own thing, you know. but but i'm all for it could happen. just think of all the eyeballs that are on park city when it happens. let's bring that here. we'll keep checking in on that pole as it changes. certainly as you have your say through the morning. all right. let's focus on what's happening overseas here as this morning it does appear israel is making changes to the terms of an agreement for a new ceasefire in gaza. according to the new york times, israel has reduced the number of hostages that it wants hamas to free from 40 to 33. the changes raised expectations that hamas and israel might be getting closer to agreeing to the terms of a cease fire. us secretary of state antony blinken, who is in the middle east, says israel has made an extraordinarily generous offer to a senior hamas official, says hamas is studying the israeli proposal here at home. a protest on stanford university's campus continues, despite school administration telling students that what
9:04 am
they're doing is against policy and could lead to consequences. his ktvu james torres live at stanford here with why the protesters say they're not really taking those threats seriously. james yeah. garcia, the students here say that they don't think the university really has any plans to break down the demonstrations they have going on here. what you see behind me is something that's been here since about thursday afternoon. a dozens of tents that have been here, students have been camping out in the 50s and 40s. they say, in fact, they're feeling even more empowered each day since this past thursday because of the support they have received. most notably, some of that being seen in a spring student body election. a third of the entire student population voted, and that's typically for items like class presidents, officers and other initiatives. well, one initiative on the ballot was to call for the university to divest funds from companies accused of contributing to israeli violence in gaza. they specifically name lockheed martin, chevron, and hewlett packard. of the students who voted, about 70% agreed to pass
9:05 am
that initiative. one student representative here says because of that support, they don't plan to back down to stanford's threats. they threaten us with officer community standards violations, threaten us with academic disciplinary actions. but honestly, they're not. it doesn't feel as if they're trying to actually maybe it does feel like they're trying to shut us down, but they're scared to do anything because they know that we're going to fight back because they know we have so much support from the local community, from students on campus, that if they did try anything, it would honestly and poorly for them. so ktvu did reach out to some of the companies aimed at by these protesters. a spokesperson from lockheed martin issued a statement saying in part, we respect the right to peaceful protest and we continue to stand ready to support the u.s. government and allies to deliver strategic deterrence and security solutions. we've yet to hear from stanford university today. we have reached out, but we do know school administration
9:06 am
has told these students in the last couple of days that they are in violation of its protest policies, mainly because of these overnight encampments and these tents. we know that the school had asked for those tents to be gone as of friday night. but again, those student protesters say that they don't feel real threats when it comes to what the university is telling them. of course, saying that they could face consequences and that student code of conduct, as well as community standards possibly leave some permanent reprimands on their academic, achievements. now we also know that police officers have come through the camp grounds here taking a look, checking out how the protest is being conducted. although we have not heard any reports of any arrests. reporting live this morning i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. okay, james thank you. time 906 police patrols are increasing on the ucla campus. after a weekend of very tense and sometimes violent protests, he was about to go. there were several fights on the campus yesterday between
9:07 am
pro-palestinian demonstrators and pro-israel counter protesters. the violence came during a campus demonstration that involved thousands of protesters, many of them ucla students, and at usc. police in riot gear went back to that campus after pro-palestinian demonstrators returned with tents. they've reestablished their encampment only days after police arrested 93 protesters. now, last week, usc canceled its main commencement ceremony because of safety concerns. as the campus of cal poly humboldt is now closed for the rest of the semester due to protests, administrators announced over the weekend all of its students will be working remotely during the final three weeks of this semester, and they say anyone on campus without authorization is subject to citation or arrest by university police. the decision to close the campus comes in response to the pro-palestine protesters, who will who currently operate two university buildings. our time is now 907.
9:08 am
we'll new this morning. governor newsom next month will be traveling to the vatican. he'll take part in the vatican climate summit. the governor will be speaking at the summit of mayors and governors, hosted by pope francis. aides to the governor says he'll talk about the impact of fire, flood and drought on california. the governor says he appreciates the pope's leadership on the climate crisis . governor jerry brown also attended the vatican climate comment summit when he was in office. back in 2017. people who drive electric vehicles should have an easier time finding a place to charge in california than never before, governor newsom said. there are now there is now one ev charging station for every gas station in our state. the governor also highlighted a move by tesla to open up its supercharger network to most other evs, and said that will help in the state's goal of going zero emissions on all vehicles. today, we're announcing tesla's opening up its charging network to additional models of electric vehicles. this is all in an
9:09 am
effort to build out the infrastructure in the state of california that currently totals 105,000 electric vehicle chargers for public use, and about 10,000 of these super charging stations. in 2020, governor newsom signed an executive order calling for all new cars sold to be zero emission vehicles by the year 2035. california is purchasing its own opioid reversal drug for a fraction of the normal price. the drug is a generic version of narcan. it can save someone's life during an opioid overdose. california is buying the drug from a new jersey based pharmaceutical company for about 40% cheaper than the market rate, the state says it will be eventually available under the state's cal rx label and will be given to first responders, university and community organizations at no cost. a teenager on the peninsula is helping raise awareness about the deadly effects of fentanyl. rohan dalal is the founder of hillsborough youth commission. the 17 year old came up with the idea to host hillsborough's

first ever fentanyl awareness day. the goal of the event was to educate fellow students and their parents about accidental fentanyl poisoning. i kept hearing all these stories about teens like just like me, who were overdosing. i know a lot of, illicit fentanyl and drugs laced with fentanyl can come from snapchat. the cdc says fentanyl overdose is the leading cause of death for adults younger than the age of 46. wild weather in other parts of the country has turned deadly. coming up on the nine how the governor of oklahoma frames the damage. in a state that's seen so much destruction over the years, then investing in oakland , what key stakeholders say needs to be done to bring a sense of safety and success to oakland's future. amid growing concerns over issues including public safety and homelessness. breathing claritin clear is like a pretty girls walk like this. it is he claritin clear? yeah.

9:14 am
lost their lives four in oklahoma and one in iowa. a state of emergency has been declared for 12 counties in oklahoma, oklahoma's governor calling it the worst he's seen since he's been in office. you just can't believe it just hit down perfectly. just kind of destroyed this little town. it was unbelievable. the damage truly devastating, especially in sulfur, oklahoma. this drone video shows what's left of the town. officials say every business in the area appears to be destroyed. i know that everything i've ever worked for and put together, my father, my wife, my wife, my mom is being torn apart and there's nothing i can do. the national weather service confirming the damage from this outbreak looks to be at least of an ef three tornado, about 43,000 customers across the state were left without power as a result. in the house that was right beside her is right up against her back door.
9:15 am
so it's crazy. meanwhile, tornadoes devastating parts of nebraska and iowa over the weekend as well. those tornadoes moving for miles ultimately slamming into towns like elkhorn, nebraska, just west of omaha, and nebraska governor jim pillen declaring a state of emergency late sunday, unlocking additional resources for those families who need all the help they can get to rebuild in elkhorn, nebraska, i'm nicole valdez, ktvu, fox two news. just devastating weather there. here in the bay area for some changes. might feel a little unusual for the end of april. beginning of may. steve. well, it's the first weekend in may that we're concerned about you may not be happy with me, gasia, but we'll get to that later in the week, we do have wind gusts have come way down, but on the weekend, man, they were up there rocking and rolling here 31 to 47mph. the 47 at ocean beach, oakland airport, 46, sfo, 44, hayward 40. i know around
9:16 am
vallejo, marin canyon, napa 35 to almost 40 miles an hour. so there's still a pretty good breeze out there. and middle peak, north side of town and northwest 34, pittsburgh west at 20. so there will be a decent little breeze again, we can't get out of that pattern, novato, northwest, 21, santa rosa airport, 20 northwest to 28mph. onshore breeze the city 6351 today. what's average? 6350. so you're right there. the records don't go back that far. 90 on the high side, 1996 and 44 and 2002. city temps have been stuck 60, 60, 62, 62 the last four days only going 63 today. i'm already nervous by that. it just will probably end up at 62. this is incredibly cold for this time of year. to see a 50 degree water temp at san francisco. boy, this is the monterey bay aquarium 51. that's cold for the end of april. so any warmth inland and that fog will be back. it's getting chewed up by a northwest breeze today, but
9:17 am
the systems up in the pacific northwest just keep that breeze going for us, the key will be what's going to happen here as we go forward. it looks like possibility of a maybe a deep, deep system coming in here for the weekend. we'll see 50s on the temps. we had a lot of low and mid 40s this morning. if it wasn't for the breeze we would have been colder. i think we would have had a couple upper 30s, but we are smooth sailing and clear to go as the visible satellite. but as long as those systems keep moving into the north, we really are hard pressed to warm up. there's the high pressure is just too far to the west. so and you can see now that our good friend the gfs, that's our global system here has gone absolutely bonkers on rain for saturday and into sunday. other forecast models? not so much. we'll see. but there will be a significant change by the weekend. cool and windy is the way it looks right now. easy breezy for us though. lots of sunshine. looks nice. sunny side up, 60s 70s. not much of a change for the next couple of days and that looks like a big cooldown. big change going into the weekend. thank you steve. this weekend our special program, the state of the town took a deep dive into oakland. its issues, its progress, and
9:18 am
its future. it included a roundtable moderated by ktvu cristina rendon and greg lee, and four community leaders, and they talked about their hopes for oakland moving forward. i want to get final thoughts about the hope for oakland, your vision for the future. katie, we'll start with you. yeah, well , oakland is eager to make an equitable recovery, but we can't do it alone. so my hope is that philanthropists, elected officials, local, regionally and federally hear our message and find ways to support us, open up streams of funding because we want to recover and we want to be back whole. yeah. great my hope is that the country, the world sees oakland for what it is. and that's the cultural heartbeat of, you know, this, this state and this country. and i hope that what i see every day
9:19 am
is seen by, you know, more and more people. and that is brilliance. that is vibrancy, that is creativity, that is ingenuity. and that's in the community that that we have here in oakland. and that needs to be uplifted. and that is a promise for, you know, that that we can share with people because it already exists and it's not something that, you know, needs to be fabricated. so for investment and for anybody that's looking to support the reasons are already here. umma kendall, i hope for reinvestment and more education reinvestment in those previously disinvested communities. and i hope for more education, more programs like tnt, more more to see tnt expand , to see more students knowing how to prevent the violence that's happening in their community so that our generation can grow up and we can have a safer, brighter, happier
9:20 am
oakland. yeah. and i feel like the problems we have in oakland are systemic across the country. as a matter of fact. and when you really look at what's going on, i mean, oakland is right there too. but oakland has always been in the spotlight. and for being a smaller city than a whole lot of them, san francisco in particular, what we do in oakland has resonated all across the country, and i believe what we're getting ready to do with abating the problems with crime and all of the things that we've been seeing too much of lately, i believe it's going to resonate, resonate all over the city, all over the country as well, and be the answer to abate the problems that we've been having now for too long. there's a lot more to that discussion, and you can see the entire program, the state of the town on the fox local at any time. just download that app for your smart tv. all right. coming up on mornings on two the night, there could be a new way to extend crab season in northern california. what some fishermen are now trying to save, to do to

in berkeley. an intense push to recruit more women to the fire department. now, over the weekend, more than 30 women gathered for a firefighter camp at the berkeley fire department training center, one of many efforts to attract more women to a profession that's been dominated by men for years. right now, there are only 18 women serving as berkeley firefighter and emts. the women started the weekend of learning, finding out how to properly carry the fire department's ladders. really neat to be like, can i do this? like, am i able to do this and then see like, oh yeah, i totally can. this is a doable thing. it's achievable if you want to achieve it, this camp is really, really good for that. now, over the past decade, the number of female firefighters has increased, but they still make up less than 10% of fire departments. there will be fewer crossing guards in marin county starting in the fall. last year, the transportation authority of marin increased the number of school crossing guard sites from
9:26 am
96 to 104. now the agency says it doesn't have the funding to continue that. in may and is continue that for the next school year and is now going back to its old number of 96. and many of these cases, there may be another guard a block down or nearby that, you know, families could then change their route a little bit and still, you know, feel like they're traveling on a route that has a guard. so we definitely will be working with the safe routes side of the program on that, as well as potentially on kind of re-emphasizing the safety education that they do for second graders and fourth graders at schools where there is a guard that is being, a guard location that's being eliminated. the transportation authority says it will have maps available. so families can find the crossing guard closest to their route, the one they've been using is being eliminated. the jfk promenade in san francisco's golden gate park is celebrating four years of service as a car free space for

9:31 am
over 11,000 americans found 37% prefer it over using cold water. now, people in the northeast tend to do it more often. here in the western states, we do tend to favor using cold water, so maybe that's why i've never heard of this. yeah, same survey also found 62% of americans turn off the water while brushing their teeth, as they should. 35% leave it running. did you even raise your hand when i mentioned gasia hot water? i don't do it every time, but often i brush my teeth after shaving. okay, so i still have running hot water and i'll just real quick. wow. but i mean, and it's over and done real quick. but yeah, i'm guilty. that's it doesn't sound as refreshing. it's not okay to be honest. it's more convenience. it sounds like more of a convenience. okay. yeah. i don't do it with hot water. have you even heard of it before? i we, you know, actually remember, you know, our coworker bailey bailey was talking about it one day, and i'm thinking, bailey, are you from mars? what are you doing? are you from mars? so she does it, too? yeah, i guess she does. right and, i just like the, like you said, refreshing

where one person remains in custody this morning accused of attacking that small city's police chief. the incident unfolded friday afternoon at the ace hardware store on grand avenue. police say 42 year-old willie gomer randomly struck a customer inside the store. officers responded and while trying to subdue him, used a taser on gomer. they say gomer then ran to a nearby home and investigators say gomer attacked the police chief. jeremy bowers, who joined other officers outside the home. the chief suffered minor injuries. he says the entire incident could and should have been avoided. why? this person was even out. he was on parole for kidnaping, robbery and numerous other charges and so clearly he was not in a state where he should be out and about in the public, given his his his level of criminal violent activity. police say the customer attacked inside the hardware store was rushed to the hospital and is expected to recover. our time is now 933. hundreds of people gathered in pleasanton paying tribute to the family killed last week in a car

9:44 am
where they make fire suppression equipment. and inside this building is where they are having a conference. there's representatives from government agencies in the us, even outside the us. also, representatives from nasa and the faa, they're talking about guidelines on how to introduce and allow regulations for firefighting type drones. the technology is there. the regulations, though, aren't so they talked about the technology. and one of the companies that makes one of these firefighting drones, a drone with a tank attached to the bottom that can spray fire retardant, spoke to us about how this technology would be beneficial if in some cases, it's very dangerous sending a manned aircraft into those areas with the drone system, we can get it into that area for us safely. i'd like to know when we can get this up in the air, when we can test this, when we can find out the limits of this capability. now, when this type
9:45 am
of technology would really be available and available for fire departments to use. that is the big question. again, right now, the faa has certain guidelines about any type of drone, whether it's for fire suppression or firefighting or not. it has to be within a view of the drone operator. obviously, if you're going to send a firefighting drone to a remote area where firefighters can't go to say if there's a wildfire, you won't be able to see that drone. so some industry experts say that the rules need to be updated and changed so that this type of technology can be put into practical use. and that's, again, that's the topic that they're discussing here at this conference that's happening at comodo systems, this fire suppression company in morgan hill. live in morgan hill. allie rasmus, ktvu, fox two news okay. allie thank you. our time is now 945. the month of april is national volunteer month, and a bay area doctor really took that to heart. she just came back from a trip to jamaica, where she worked in medical clinics
9:46 am
and health care fairs to help people get access to services they might not normally get. with me now is kaiser permanente emergency room physician doctor mary meyer with me. and i'm so glad you're here. thank you. it's a pleasure for me to be here today. tell me about this trip, what happened on the trip, but how you became involved with volunteering and traveling to places like jamaica? yeah, absolutely. so i'm an emergency medicine physician by training. i in my usual work, i work for kaiser permanente and i work for a number of their medical centers walnut creek, antioch, oakland. but i've always had a passion for global health. and so it's something i've been tracking for years. and about five years ago, somebody asked me if i would like to begin working as a volunteer for an organization called integrative integrative clinics international. and so i decided to dive in. i decided it was time to go and do it, for me, it's something that i have now been doing for five years. it's
9:47 am
about service. it's about giving back. and it's something that i find incredibly fulfilling. so it's something i've remained committed to. so you just came back from jamaica. what did you see when? well, so what i do when i go to jamaica, i am working with a nonprofit organization and i'm part of a mobile health team. this health team is about 15 to 20 people. it's composed of physicians and nurses, and it really is integrative. we have physicians and nurses of all specialties. when we're lucky, we bring a dentist with us. on this past visit, we had an acupuncture join us. yes. and what we do is we participate in two types of forums for about half the week. we work in local health care clinics, and when we do this work, it looks a lot like what you might experience in this country if you go to a clinic and see your regular doctor. so this is going to look like a health care clinic where we see patients in rooms with a sink
9:48 am
and a bed. and i'm doing primary care and i'm talking to people about their health conditions and their medicines. and then for the other half of the week, we participate in health fairs, and the health fairs are more sort of a pop up scenario, and they tend to occur in local settings, anywhere where there's a big space that can hold them. so, for instance, it might be a local school. we held one health fair at tuff gong studios in kingston, and these events are more there's a lot more focus on education, bringing the community together, celebrating the community and working with the health of the individuals of the community and the community as a whole. so when you go to places like jamaica, how long do you stay and what's the reaction from the people? so this is work that i do for a week. i want to point out that there are all sorts of ways to do global health and international work. what i like about this particular adventure is i'm able to do it for a week, which means that i can do my work in the united states and then also
9:49 am
participate in this work. the reaction from from everyone is amazing, to be honest. people are so grateful for my team is just this fantastic group of individuals to work with. my favorite part of the work is meeting local people and understanding what people's lives are like in jamaica, because we have been this organization has been there for 20 years and it's very trusted, very integrated with the community. i'm very privileged to be able to talk with people about things that are very important to them and hear their authentic reality. what their lives are like and what they worry about and what their health care concerns are. you know, i can tell you're encouraging people just by being you and what you have done. you've encouraged me to thank you, doctor mary meyer, thank you from kaiser permanente. and make sure you continue to follow the type of things doctor mary meyer is doing coming up on mornings on two the ninth. we're

the a's. without the a's, it's it would just feel so wrong, like a piece of oakland soul got ripped out. that's the feeling among dozens of athletics fans that gathered at sutter health park on saturday to voice their disapproval of the team's plan to move from oakland to las vegas. it's really sad what's happening. i grew up going the games, hope to take my kids to the games in oakland, and they're just getting ripped away from us. early april, the a's owner, john fisher, announced the team will temporarily play at sutter health park in west sacramento for three seasons, starting next year. it's not necessarily that i don't want them in the city, it's that they belong in oakland. that's where they've been for, you know, over 60 years. the last dive bar in oakland, 68, organized the protest before the river cats game against the las vegas aviators. fans showed up wearing a's gears and shirts and signs with the word sell. we want john fisher to sell this team. he off

a passionate fan base, you know, and it wasn't right. although these fans are mad about losing their team, they say the biggest impact will be for the younger generation fans. it would be terrible, especially sort of in a generational sense. like there's generations of kids that won't get to make those memories at the ballpark with their family. so for them, the hope still is to keep the a's in oakland. they don't belong in vegas, and they certainly don't belong here. they belong in oakland. and that was reporter carolina estrada reporting. all right. our time is 955. this story is just for gasia because you can now ride through golden gate park on roller skates, even if you don't have your own pair of skates. now, the park's beloved skating place is offering rentals every weekend. sf rec and parks department teamed up with church of eight wheels to make those those skate skating shoes. the skates available skating place is on the jfk promenade near sixth avenue. the godfather of skates

9:57 am
that's right. band members at elsie allen high school have been using the same uniforms for 30 years. they're now working to raise $25,000 to pay for some new ones. now, for years, the former instructor would repair the old uniforms so they'd last. but the current teacher says they have outlived their use. the band recently bought some new uniforms and now has to pay for them. the challenge when i came to elsie and i saw the uniforms, i was like, whoa, these are old. we didn't use these uniforms because we just couldn't use them anymore. they were, you know, they were beyond where we could presentably, you know, fashionably, put the students in there and make them feel good about themselves. an online fundraising page shows the band is about halfway to its goal of 25 k. 25,000 students say they've been fundraising nonstop. there was, some students who you would go to door to door, you know, be polite and just ask for money and, you know, simply get it.
9:58 am
and then there were some that, you know, went out doing some performance, you know, like just showing their stuff and making people like, you know, oh, yeah, i want to donate to elsie allen high school because these students look amazing. when you look good, you feel good. you might even sound better if you would like to help. and i hope you're in a position to. this friday. the band is raising money at its spring concert. the concert will feature elsie allen high school's drumline, mariachi band and color guard as couples get ready to tie the knot later this year, wedding planners have a few etiquette tips for guests to keep in mind. brides and grooms usually spend a lot of time putting their wedding guest list together. etiquette experts recommend that the first thing you should do if you're invited to a wedding is rsvp on time by the deadline. they also say weddings are expensive, so don't just assume if they invited you, you can just bring a plus one. it may be that simply you don't have the capacity at the venue. it may be that you need to keep budget as tight as possible. this decision to invite you, it's an honor, but if it was
