>> good evening to you on this wednesday. i'm cristina rendon. protesters all over the country and here in the bay area took to the streets this may day to make their voices heard. we begin tonight in oakland with ktvu jana katsuyama, where a pro-palestinian protest is wrapping up. gianna >> yes, it wrapped up very peacefully. we are here at frank ogawa plaza in front of city hall. and if you take a look behind me, there were people here from labor unions, from health care unions, and many people from the community. you can see they left behind this sign that says labor for palestine, a merging of missions between workers on may day and also calls for peace in gaza. hundreds of protesters filled the streets of downtown oakland wednesday, a march from the federal building to frank ogawa plaza at city hall. it was a may day demonstration that saw the traditional workers rights advocates merging with palestinian groups, calling for an end to violence and civilian deaths in gaza, many families

joined in the demonstration that blocked traffic at points but remained peaceful. >> the palestinian general federation of labor unions called on labor unions worldwide to spend their may day demanding a cease fire and lifting up the voices of palestinian workers. >> citizens can bring together and build together. >> at the plaza, people gathered to hear speakers from dozens of nonprofit groups. the freedom flotilla, who recently went to deliver humanitarian aid to gaza, as well as other community members. >> i'm awfully grateful that it is finally waking the u.s. up. >> it's reconstruction, whatever it takes, so that gazans, palestinians in general can go back to their whatever peaceful lives they had before. >> different groups unifying behind a common cause to change u.s. funding, rising investment in military services at the same time that people are seeing a divestment from basic social services. >> so, yes, we're seeing an

intersection of our different movements coming together. >> and back here live at. frank ogawa plaza, this rally drew a lot of families. it was very peaceful. we did see police at one point behind the marchers, as they were blocking broadway, but they got here to frank ogawa plaza. and then after that, not a sign of any law enforcement. it was a very quiet but emotional day here and very peaceful. >> christina jana katsuyama reporting live for us tonight in oakland. gianna. thank you. organizers of may day marches for worker's rights joined forces with pro-palestinian activists for a demonstration today in san francisco as well. it started off at 24th street and mission street, where workers gathered and rallied at around ten this morning. the workers say they are speaking out for immigrant, worker and undocumented workers rights, as well as the right to organize labor. the protests at college campuses nationwide continued, with some ending in arrests and violence. we'll give you a live

look now at ucla, where hundreds of people are gathered on campus . excuse me, we don't have that picture. but we do know that some people holding signs were demanding the university divest from companies that do business with israel. there are reports police are poised to move in on the crowd and make arrests, but we have not seen anyone taken into custody yet. in the last hour, ucla announced all classes tomorrow and friday will be remote. all classes at the university were canceled today after pro-palestinian and pro-israel demonstrators clashed all night long. fireworks there thrown into the camp along with other objects and police were able to separate the groups. after hours of arguments which lessened the violence. 15 people were hurt at columbia university in new york city, police carrying riot shields burst into an occupied building on campus last night, the university said the takeover was a drastic escalation of the encampment, which raised safety risks to a, quote, intolerable level. new york mayor eric adams said outside agitators had infiltrated the student protest,

and the university asked police to step in. nypd says about 300 people were arrested at columbia and nearby city college. we received late word today from the south bay that the recount in the district 16 congressional race is over, assembly member evan lowe is set to move on and face sam liccardo in november, knocking out supervisor joe simitian. san mateo county finished its portion of the recount, including the review of 16 challenged ballots. elections officials say they accepted seven of those, which resulted in lowe gaining one vote, simitian receiving zero. lowe took the lead over by simitian by four votes yesterday after santa clara county released their results. lowe now leads by a total of five votes for second place. he said he's excited by the opportunity to reintroduce himself to voters. >> i've served in public service as a mayor, a council member, a state legislator for ten years, but also a record of service, being named the most prolific

lawmaker in sacramento from the sacramento bee. so results oriented, but also young enough to have the trajectory and runway to deliver and have tenure in congress to deliver results for our district, lowe says. >> it's a perfect example of why every vote counts. these numbers still need to be certified by the secretary of state. santa clara county supervisor joe simitian conceded today, saying he trusts the process and accepts the results. he congratulated, congratulated evan lowe and sam liccardo and added, quote, i'm disappointed on a personal level because i had looked forward to running in november and serving in congress. i'm disappointed because i couldn't deliver a win for the oh so many folks who gave their time, effort, energy and resources to our campaign, former mayor sam liccardo said in a statement. in part, quote, despite the efforts of some to stop this recount, we should all celebrate that democracy prevailed previously uncounted votes were counted. we can now refocus on our work ahead toward solutions to our regions and nation's great challenges such as homelessness, the high cost

of living, climate change, public safety and protecting reproductive rights. the head of a famous bay area winery is refuting reports she is co-hosting a fundraiser for donald trump. barbara bank is a co-founder of kendall-jackson wines in sonoma county, the conservative magazine the national review reported. she will co-host a big money event next month in kentucky, and showed the invitation with her name on it, but a spokesperson tells the press democrat she will not take part in the fundraiser and has no plans to donate to trump's campaign, and that her name was used without her consent. at the fundraiser in kentucky is for trump's leadership pac, which is reportedly raised almost $60 million for trump's legal fees. new at 730, an inmate on san quentin's death row was found dead in his cell. prison officials say. 68 year-old daniel jenkins was found dead monday morning. he was convicted of murder in the shooting death of an off duty los angeles

celebration of life is planned for sunday, may 12th at 1 p.m. at glide. organizers say the celebration will feature music, live performances and special remarks from elected officials, community leaders, family and friends. doors will open at noon. reverend williams was known as a champion of racial equality, lgbtq rights and the poor. he died on april 22nd at the age of 94. new at 730 contra costa county fire crews out today conducting a prescribed burn to clear fuels ahead of wildfire season. firefighters worked in an area between southern lafayette and walnut creek. the work is part of the lafayette walnut creek shaded fuel break project, which encompasses 268 acres along some 11 miles of open space. cal fire recently awarded the contra costa fire protection district a

$3 million grant, to go toward that fuel break project at. >> nice little warm up today here in the bay area. plenty of sunshine and even some 80s to report. this nice pattern will continue into your thursday and then some changes just in time for the weekend. take a look at the highs from this afternoon. some lower 80s for napa toward fairfield and antioch, san jose 78, san francisco in the upper 60s. and today is may 1st and may. the averages. as you can see for the month, you can see the average daytime highs out there in the 60s and the 70s. and we could actually pick up some rain. as you can see, some of the averages here, especially up in the north bay over an inch of rain. and we will be talking about some rainfall. not for tomorrow, not for friday, but into the weekend. so warm thursday and then rainfall makes a comeback on your saturday. and a definitely a noticeable cooldown. moving in. here's one of the forecast models as you can pick out. as we put this into motion, you'll see those numbers starting to go up here in the bay area this weekend and even out toward the sierra. we

could be talking about some snowfall as well. so this is primarily targeting the saturday for the first saturday time frame. as we start out the weekend. right now, though, we are in the clear. we are expecting lots of sunshine in your thursday forecast. right now. we have the winds coming in out of the north current numbers, mainly in the 60s and the 70s, is a pleasant wednesday evening for san jose. at 71, napa is 70 and oakland 62 degrees. winds have been picking up in a few spots earlier today at least. and right now santa rosa winds gusting to 22 miles an hour. sfo winds gusting to nearly 30 miles an hour. so there is a bit of a breeze out there. here is our live camera looking out toward the bay bridge, out toward san francisco, and still not much in the way of fog to speak of. we could have a few patches first thing tomorrow morning, and temperatures will be in the upper 40s to the 50s. to start off your thursday, so area of high pressure wants to stick around for tomorrow. so it is a warm, nice forecast for your thursday friday. we could have

some more fog out there, especially for the morning hours. and then this is the guy that wants to move in on saturday. definitely a sharp drop off in those numbers and we will be reintroducing some rain chances back in the forecast. so here is a tomorrow for your thursday and then into your friday. some patchy fog out there. partly sunny skies. notice the rain up here to our north and this will be approaching the area. this is saturday morning, 7:00 and then moving to the south at 4:00. so this the showers maybe could be tapering off by late saturday afternoon, but still a bit of an unsettled cooler pattern to start off the weekend. highs for tomorrow though, will be the complete opposite. lots of sunshine, temperatures on the warm side, 70 to right around 80 degrees, a little bit of some cooling in your friday forecast. and then we bring back that rain cloud on saturday. a slight chance of a shower on sunday, but for the most part we're expecting partly sunny skies and a quiet weather pattern into next week. so warming up and then cooling off big time to start off the weekend. christina >> sounds good mark. thank you. still ahead as we begin aapi heritage month, we take a look

and tonight, ktvu looks at a new effort to honor a california woman who stood up to the u.s. government in court, sacrificing years of her life to fight for citizens rights under the constitution. ktvu jana katsuyama has her story of a

petition now calling for the president to honor her memory. >> mitsuye endo, a young woman born in sacramento, was a typist at the california dmv in 1941, just 21 years old. when japan attacked pearl harbor. and what she did in those following years challenging the u.s. government in court. now has prominent attorneys, community groups and legal scholars circulating a petition calling for her to be awarded the nation's highest civilian honor, the presidential medal of freedom. >> i am very proud of my mother for what she did, and she did it for herself and her family and for all of the japanese americans who were incarcerated. >> mitsuye endo son, wayne tsutsumi, says his mother was strong but quiet and didn't tell her three children about her historic role until they were adults. >> mom did not speak about it, nor did my dad. >> san francisco attorney dale

minami is a member of the endo presidential medal of freedom committee, with attorneys katherine bannai and peggy nagai, who famously worked on other japanese american legal challenges. endo was a u.s. citizen among the 120,000 people of japanese ancestry on the west coast who were forced into what u.s. officials called concentration camps under the u.s. government's 1942 executive order 966. >> they were stripped of all their constitutional rights. >> i think she is a remarkable american historical figure. >> uc berkeley law professor amanda tyler learned about endo supreme court case while researching for her book on habeas corpus. after the pearl harbor attack, endo had been fired from the california dmv along with hundreds of other japanese americans. she agreed to work with attorney james purcell and jcl, the japanese american citizens league, to file a habeas corpus lawsuit challenging the incarceration order. >> she says, well, in that case, i will do it because it's not just for myself and my family,

but for all of the japanese americans who were unlawfully incarcerated. >> her case caused concern among government attorneys, including correspondence that goes directly to the president, saying, we know this is unconstitutional. >> and so they offered endo release. >> endo had been incarcerated at the tule lake and topaz concentration camps. >> she thought about it and she said, no, i'm not going to drop my case. you know, you're going to have to rule on the issue of an imprisonment of a concededly loyal american citizen who has never been to japan, doesn't speak japanese, is christian, has a brother in the military service, and was as american as anyone else. and she wound up staying almost two extra years in the camps because she knew that if she left the case would go away. >> on december 18th, 1944, the supreme court ruled in favor of endo, even as it ruled on the

same day against fred korematsu. >> hers was the only victory. she was the only woman that brought a case to the supreme court. >> endo's victory forced the white house to announce that the camps would be closed. fred korematsu gordon hirabayashi, and min yasui, who also filed cases against the government, each ended up receiving the presidential medal of freedom for their legal challenges. she showed the same kind of courage that fred and gordon and min did, but she didn't get this recognition and died in 2006. and in 2015, the jcl launched a campaign to see endo honored posthumous early 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of endo's landmark supreme court victory, and the jcl has sent a letter to president biden, many people now hoping to finally honor her legacy. >> i loved her very much. i'm very proud of her. >> i think every american should

of air travel. after a series of close calls between planes at airports across the country, including sfo. members of the house and senate agreed on a bill that will increase the number of air traffic controllers and require the use of new technology meant to prevent runway collisions. the senate could vote on its version of the bill next week. >> the big thing is we put $106 billion into the faa, a budget for the next five years and a requirement for the faa director

to fill those 3000 positions with his discretion so that we can raise the pay and recruit people. >> consumer groups are pushing congress to include a provision requiring automatic refunds for passengers whose flights are canceled or delayed for several hours. the biden administration just released new rules requiring automatic cash refunds , but advocates say that language in the bill contradicts that rule. avelo airlines today celebrated its expanded service out of charles schulz airport in sonoma county. the expansion brings 50 new jobs to the airport and surrounding businesses. the low cost airline is adding four new flights from sonoma county. nonstop service is now offered to kalispell, montana. boise, idaho. salem, oregon. and pasco, washington. that's in addition to avelo's flights to palm springs, las vegas, burbank and bend, oregon. new at 730 mountain view is the latest bay area city considering license plate cameras as part of its public safety plan. later this month, the city council is
