>> wicked and wild weather for your commute on friday. we have a definition of a nasty weather day. a nor'easter slamming into our area. what a mess. when is it all going to be out of here? and what can we expect for the weekend. mayor bill de blasio in various because he picked someone to replace the retiring school chancellor in new york city. in a very public way the superintendent said i don't want the job. >> how are you going to get supporters to vote for you if you can't make up your mind. >> bill de blasio has not shown that he has any administrative competence. >> was going to be in charge of the new york city schools? would you clone your dog?

barbra streisand that it not once but twice. >> wait until you hear how much it costs. this is "chasing news." ♪ ♪ >> we have a weather alert for you tonight. as well as chaser coverage of the nor'easter that slammed into our area. checking in with our meteorologist. first, check in with dave rogers who has a report on the ground. what a mess today was and what can we expect going forward. >> it is absolutely impossible to make it to route the day without this layer upon layer. take a look at these overturned trucks. the officials say that high winds caused the accident. state troopers responded to 100 weather-related crashes today. here is another total of power

lines along the new jersey transit. >> it is really cold outside. i would not recommend going outside if you don't have to. >> traffic throughout the city was bumper to bumper and frustrating for drivers. >> if you want to get from one point to the other it is double the time. >> we saw several cars trying to get down water covered roads in rockaway beach. and not everyone was complaining about weather conditions today. we found one guy enjoying these waves on his surf ward. there are also 100,000 power outages here. new jersey cruise will work to restore those services. >> you have the details. the most in important question

is what can we expect for the weekend. >> all day long we were hammered by rain and snow and sometimes a little bit of both. pretty fierce wind gusts as well. one to 2-inch range, sussex county, new jersey, well over a foot on the ground. the top end speed 60 miles per hour along the southern new jersey coast. now we will see snow tapering off through the overnight. there could still be some ice and wet spots for saturday but then we will continue to see improvement. two items of note. number one, it is going to stay a bit windy for saturday and we continue to watch the coastal flooding picture very closely and we will talk more about that coming up in just a little bit. >> positive train control. some say it could have prevented

a death after a train derailed in hoboken. there is a federal guideline out to get the trains equipped with positive train control, and it doesn't look like the mta and the long island railroad and new jersey transit are going to make the december deadline. we have the details. what is going on, mark? >> ahead of amtrak on thursday announced that two train systems are in the most jeopardy of not making the federal deadline in order to meet the deadline for positive train control. those two are new jersey transit and metro-north. they won't even be able to go into the hudson river tunnel if they don't do this, therefore nobody will be able to get into where they should. amtrak says that they have some reserve powers in place, but it's nowhere near enough to fully form the new jersey

transit to be fully safe going ahead. >> this is an opportunity and potentially an avatar for phil murphy and andrew cuomo who have eyes on the white house for 2020. we have to solve this problem first. thank you. >> thank you. >> let's bring in someone who is a bit of an expert on transportation issues. a former compliance officer who was fired. he has been on our show before. he was fired after he says that he exposed some of the flaws at new jersey transit. welcome back. how are you vmax. >> i am well, thank you for having me. >> here is the question. it is not just the mta but now the new jersey transit. you have such a major problem here. it is likely, at this point, according to reports, that new jersey transit is not going to meet this deadline. if that happens is trains will not be able to go through this hudson river crossing.

>> that is likely a possibility. i let them know that we are approaching nearly a year ago now as early as last march that i ring the alarm bells internally with the executive director who said from the information i am finding, we are definitely not going to make that deadline. unfortunately i was punished for doing that. >> let me just ask you this. do you have bitterness towards her old agency or do you have more than you think is at play here? our lives at stake? >> yes, i think that the amtrak statement shows that that is the case. is trains are not readily equipped, they don't want them on their tracks. >> using new jersey transit, given their budget issues, given the state budget issues, do you think that they could meet that

deadline with different leadership? >> the further we go along with the same leadership in place, the less likely it becomes. i would not say that it would require all of the miracle but it would be something really close. and so we need to get rid of them. we were supposed to get rid of them and put in new leadership. >> hang in there. >> thank you, bill. >> mayor bill de blasio back in the news. this is the front page of the daily news and the "new york post." he offers a job as superintendent at the miami-dade schools. he said sure, i will take that job and then during school board meeting apparently he walked out

of the room and said no, i don't want the job. john has the details. >> what an embarrassing moment. >> the cork was flying out of the champagne bottle. it is a bizarre scene that played out in front of school kids in miami. mayor bill de blasio had reached an agreement to pay him some $350,000 a year. he was paid $120,000 less. instead of saying goodbye at the school board meeting the members of the community who are crying out convinced him to stay on he broke the news to bill de blasio and then broke the news to the

school kids. it blindsided the mayor who thought that he had lured one of the most successful educators in america to new york city. >> like many of you, i was surprised by his decision. >> making matters worse is the spokesperson recently took to twitter and blasted the man just moments before. and he said who would ever hire this guy again, who would ever vote for him. and he said let's dodged. >> a nationwide search to replace the chancellor is ongoing, she will stay on as the current chancellor until they find someone. >> are you surprised?

>> welcome back to "chasing news." in a little bit we are going to have a story about cloning your dog. barbra streisand did it not once but twice. first let's check in with our meteorologist. we had a wild weather day today. what can we expect for the weekend? >> nice and dry and warm. what a storm. over a foot of snow in the mountains. several feet of storm surge and then the horizontal rain and snow with the wind gusts all day long. storm systems are moving away. everything getting call mayer. then we have some weather

concerns to look out for. the wind speeds will be blustery on saturday. gusts up to 30 miles per hour. the air will still be moving around. it will also draw a lot of water back towards the coast. we have to watch for the rough surf and the coastal flooding along. saturday morning will be the big one. we will see the moderate to spotty nature of flooding. we will hold our breath and see the high tide. the other high tides will probably be a bit high as well. then more snow showers. starting off the day in the '30s and hopping in the 40s. maybe a few peeks at sun on sunday. the wind speed continues to diminish through the rest of the weekend. >> president trump continue is to talk about what to do to keep

stuck. welcome, how are you? >> when i first heard this story i thought okay maybe she is joking. how realistic and possible is the cloning of dogs? >> it is very real. they have successfully done it. >> how expensive is this? >> well, the costs have come down to $60,000 per dog or $50,000 per dog. >> obviously it is cheaper to buy a new dog. is there some practical application here thinking about the food supply? >> i think that it is better to put that money towards the legacy and then help countless numbers of dogs that are normally going to be euthanized.
